Waited Patiently

"What is it?" I asked as Penelope slipped the necklace back under her shirt. She had shifted on her feet uncomfortably and rubbed the back of her head as a group of clouds blocked out the moon, shrouding us and the building in darkness.

"It's kind of hard to explain, but it works just like any old chip or USB stick," she stated as I looked over to Matthew, figuring she was going to use it on him. Although it was dark in the room Penelope noticed me staring at her friend and answered what I was thinking. "It'll be placed in Matt; that's why I didn't want him too know. He's been good to me up to this point and I don't want to scare him by telling him he'll be used to save the city. It'll cause some damage to him."

"Is it like a self destruct kind of thing? Or is it like a reprogrammer?" Tom questioned. He seemed more apt to listen to the soldier now knowing that our friend Chris is safe and that they'll get to see each other again. "I thought you couldn't change a drone's program?"

"You can't but I had worked with a couple of doctors to turn Matthew into a different kind of machine. He listens to orders and follows his handler but he was equipped with a system that can take orders not made physically." The clouds outside parted and the light from the moon washed through the window to illuminate the hunched body of Matthew across the room. "A coder made the chip for me to use when we meet up with the resistance. I am to put it into Matt and he'll come to life."

"Come to life? What do you mean by that?" I asked quizzically as I started wondering if her drone wasn't going to be a drone anymore. I knew he would still have the metal parts within him but would he be able to think for himself, remember the old life he had, and interact humanly with others? I hope that he can have what no other person in this world can have anymore; a life.

"No one can control him any longer. He will basically be a defector. It'll be like he's an AI unit back when the drones where first in production," Penelope explained as I remember when Globalist started the drone programme, but for a whole different reason than what they are used for now. "When I implant that chip in him he will be a whole new person. He'll get to have his old life back, with the memories and thoughts he had. It'll be a change for him, for me as well."

"But what exactly is on the chip? You're missing that part of it all," My friend beside me declared as he placed his hands in his back pockets. I looked back to the soldier in front of me as overhead the building a group of manual drones flew towards the inner city. Matt stayed in his position and continued sleeping as Penelope started talking again.

"In the chip is records, maps, information, anything on the psycho and the city he is using as a hideout. The government has kept a lot of secrets for a long time that I have uncovered with some investigation of my own and I put that in there. I have also put maps of the inner city, outer providences, subway system, and tunnel system in there so we aren't going into battle not knowing anything. And of course some top secret information on the tyrant himself."

"And you're sure this is going to work?" I asked, feeling like all Tom and I are doing is questioning her plan. The blonde haired woman nodded her head and stretched her arms into the air. I stifled a yawn and looked to my friend. He seemed sure that he was willing to come with the three of us to join the resistance and I was genuinely happy to know that he hasn't given up on the country he loved. "I'll take first shift."
