Before I could react, or for Matt to move, Tom kicked his foot into Penelope's knee to make her fall to the ground as he pointed the gun in the middle of her forehead. I stepped forward as the brunette beside them looked to me with caution in his eyes as I lowered my gun and placed my hand on Thomas's shoulder. He was angry and he had a valid reason to be but I knew for a fact that these weren't the people who had killed our friends.

"Tom, put the gun away," I soothe my friend as the woman dropped her eyes from us and started to whisper an incantation under her breath. All the while, Matt looked between his friend and Tom as he had no idea what to do in this situation he was placed in. "Clearly they don't want to hurt us. You guys escaped, didn't you?"

"Barely with our life's," Matt had spoke as the blonde haired woman in front of us looked up with tears brimming at the edge of her eyes and a grim frown etched on her lips. Tom removed the barrel of the pistol from her head and stepped back as her friend helped her off the ground and stood beside her. "I wish I could tell you that we left without repercussions, though."

"What do you mean?" I asked as I noticed my dark haired friend still fuming with anger. Penelope looked to Matt in a silent conversation as she glanced back to the two of us.

"We had some unwanted guests following us since we left. Though I know how to shake them off." The women in front of me had dirty blonde hair and hard, grey eyes that bore into my own natural grey hues. She was a little shorter than her friend but with her thick army boots, camouflage pants, and white tank top she stood out from him in a commanding way.

"Tell us who you are first," Tom said forcefully as I put my gun back in its holster and he let his lay at his side. As the two strangers in front of us shifted on their feet uncomfortably the light from the fire behind us casted our shadows on to them in a dark overcast. "Why did you leave the inner city? Why go against your ruler?"

"Well, there's been rumour going around our compound that there's a resistance. A group of people willing to fight against the psycho and to restore peace back to the land. I heard that they are planning on taking the inner city back at the end of this week. Matthew and I came from Compound Twelve just outside the city walls, the one that's been sending out all the drones and reapers to the exit points out of the city. When I was there I was a major in the handler programme. Matt, he's a drone, he's my drone.

"Within the compound there are many other soldiers like me that wish to join the resistance and end the rule of our tyrant so they sent me out for I have inside contact with one of the resistors. Without a second thought, the general, who has no idea of the plan, sent me out with Matt to hunt down anyone leaving the city. You two have been the only ones we've come across. We need as much help as we can get at this point. If you come with Matt and me into the city it will be easier for us and more help to the resistance."

My heart races in my chest as I listen intently to Penelope's story. I know now that there are people still alive who are fighting against the system of the government and that many of the insiders want to join in and shut it down completely as well. I also feel unsettled around the two of them after knowing that she's a skilled soldier and that her friend is a drone.

"But why you of all the people wanting something better of their lives?" Tom questions Penelope as I see him more at ease but still on edge. The blonde haired woman rubs the back of her neck uncomfortably as Matt pivots on his foot to go pick up the knife still laying in the grass.

"You could say that I'm a leader of the resistance."
