"Oh, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have come. I'll just leave," I spit out grabbing my suitcase and practically running down the steps.

"No wait. I'm sorry. Why don't you come in," Sam said coming further out on the porch. I stopped and turned to face him cautiously. I stayed in the same spot, unsure of what to do. "It's ok," Sam said reassuringly, extending his hand to wave me back.

I slowly approach him and walk into the house stepping over the broken plate. Sam followed me in. "I'll clean that up later," he whispered getting in front of me. "Emily," Sam called walking to the kitchen and out of sight. I remained in the foyer trying to take in everything.

The house was small and had a very friendly atmosphere. While I was looking at some pictures hanging on the wall, Sam came back along with a young woman. "Emily, this is my niece Hayley," Sam introduced me.

"Nice to meet you," Emily said extending a hand. I shake it gently and smile in return. Emily was very pretty with long black hair, tan skin and brown eyes. Three scars were predominately showing on the right side of her face. I tried not to stare too long.

" Like wise," I reply taking my hand back.

"The guest room is upstairs, first door on the left. Why don't you go get settled," Sam said pointing to the stairs behind him. I nod in response and head upstairs leaving Sam and Emily in the foyer.

Once to the room, I gently push the door open. There was a decent sized bed, a dresser, and a night stand. I sling the suitcase on the bed and walk around the room. I looked out the window and saw the woods behind the house. I didn't see any animals because it was so dark but I'm sure there would be something to see in the day. I then saw pictures of Sam and Emily and another one of a group of boys and one girl. On the dresser, sat a jewelry box. In one of the compartments of the jewelry box, was a beautiful necklace with a wolf charm. I'd never seen anything like it before.

"Like it," Sam says startling me. He came and stood beside me as I put the necklace back. I walked back and sat on the bed. Sam remained standing in silence and staring at me.

"You're probably wondering why I'm here, why I showed up on your doorstep after eleven years," I say looking at my hands. He didn't say anything so I took it as a sign to continue. "I'm sorry I barged in on you...I-I just didn't know where else to go," I began.

"Honey, you've always been welcome here. I just don't see why now after so long," Sam replied sitting and taking my hand.

"Well I just had to get out of my house. My dad and I have had some..uh..problems," I state. No need for him to know the truth about his abusive brother yet, I thought to myself.

"You know I'm going to have to call your dad to tell him where you are," Sam interjects which only send panic racing through my veins. He couldn't call my dad. He'd come and get me. The punishment would be the worst it has been if he ever found me or knew I told someone.

"No, please don't! Please, please," I say starting to breath heavily and tear up. There was no telling what he'd do to me if he found out where I was.

"Ok,ok, I won't. Don't worry," Sam corrected taking me in his arms and rocking me a little. I took some deep breathes and calmed down afraid that if I didn't I'd give it away. "Well I'll let you get unpacked. If you're hungry, supper will be soon," Sam says as he gets up and walks toward the door.

"Uncle Sam.." I say in almost a whisper. He turns and faces me with his hand on the doorknob. "Thanks," I finish with aweak smile. He gives me a small smile in return before closing the door behind him and leaving me to myself. Maybe the meeting wasn't exactly how I imagined it but now Ihad a home and a person who'd care for me properly. Not bad if I do say so myself.
