Sam's eyes grew wide in realization. Where was Emily? Was she hurt? Everyone was quiet as they stared at us. I saw panic fill Sam as he began to react to what I had said. "Emily," he suddenly yelled frantically. I tried to comfort him but he pulled away. I couldn't imagine not knowing where Jacob was and I knew that he felt the same because he squeezed my hand. "Split up and find her," Sam commanded. None of us argued because we all wanted her to be ok. We each fanned out across the yard, the pack trying to get a scent, me just searching. "Emily! Can you hear me?" I yelled into the woods, unsure if she was even out there. For some reason though, I felt a pull to go in them. I looked back at the others then cautiously walked in. "Emily?" I said loudly. I walked a little farther, then I heard a noise. It sounded almost like a whimper. I walked closer and saw Emily sitting in a ball crying behind a tree.
I ran to her and kneeled beside her. "Oh, I thought something happened to you. Are you ok?" I exclaimed pulling her into a hug, tears filling my eyes. She nodded and began to calm down as she hugged me back. "Come on, I'll get you out of here. The others will be glad to see you're safe," I say pulling her up and began trudging back to the house, well what was now more like a big bonfire. Once we reached the opening, we began to walk faster. "Sam, over here," I yelled. Emily left my side and sprinted to Sam, embracing him. Everyone was by us in a blink of an eye. Jacob came up behind me and pulled me into his chest. "What happened honey?" Sam asked Emily stroking her hair. "I was in the house, preparing supper, then I felt like I was being watched. When I looked out the kitchen window, I saw several vampires with torches walking from the woods. I kept myself from screaming and ran from the house as quietly as possible. I hid in the woods, scared of what would happen if they found me. I figured you would come eventually," Emily rambled, getting choked up.
I saw Sam tense up as she told the story. Jacob even tensed behind me. "Ok, I don't want ot risk your safety anymore. I want you to take the car and take Hayley out of La Push," Sam said looking down at Emily. "What!?" I exclaimed pulling away from Jake and a step toward Sam. "I want you to go somewhere safe until we have taken care of this issue. The rest of you go tell your loved ones the same," Sam commanded, looking around our group. The others disappeared into the woods but Jacob stayed by me. "You can't do this," I said to Sam as he stood with Emily. He reached into his pocket and handed her the keys. Sam walked with Emily to the car, bluntly ignoring me, and leaving Jake and I standing in the light of the fire.
"I'm not leaving....I can't," I say shaking my head as I turned to face him. "Hayley, you have to," he replied touching my shoulders. "No, I won't. I won't leave you. I already told you at the Cullens how I felt," I rambled. "Your safety is all I care about right now. I need you to be ok,"Jacob said pulling me to him. Tears were streaming down my face. As I looked up at him, I could tell he was crying as well because the tears glistened off his skin in the light of the fire. "Hayley," Sam said from behind me. I turned and Sam took my arm and led me to the running car where Emily waited. Thoughts ran through my head a mile a minute. I almost felt like I could pass out. There was one thing I had to do before I left. I got loose from Sam and ran to Jacob, throwing my arms around his neck, kissing him passionately.
He wrapped his arms tightly around my torso, pulling me closer to him. If I left, this could be the last time I'd see him, kiss him, hold him. I didn't want it to end. I wanted to just remain as we were but far away where we wouldn't be spearated. We finally pulled apart, Jacob letting me back on my feet. "I love you Jake," I said looking into his eyes. "I love you too Hayley," he replied. He bent down and kissed my lips again. "Now go," he whispered in my ear. I began to walk backwards not leaving his eye contact. As we got farther apart, our fingers slipped from each others. Sam held the door open as I climbed in. He closed it behind me and then went to give Emily a kiss. As Emily pulled away I looked out the back. Sam disappeared into the woods right away but Jacob stood watching us go. Tears were streaming down my face as the distance between us grew farther and farther before he turned and ran into the woods.
