Life in La Push was strange but good. I had met the rest of Sam's friends. Paul and Jared were extremely cool. Paul had a little bit of a temper and Jared was always cracking jokes. Jared's girlfriend Kim and I had even become best friends. I got used to seeing all of them because they always seemed to be at my house. Jacob and I have grown closer or so I like to think. There was still that little voice in the back of my mind that doubted Jacob could like a girl like me.We rarely got any time to ourselves though.

"So you going to the bonfire on the beach tonight?" Kim asked while she amd I layed on the floor watching tv. We were the only ones in the house for once. " I didn't even know there was a bonfire tonight," I replied not looking away from the tv. " Well Jacob's going to be there," Kim said nudging me in the side. That caught my attention. Kim knew I had a crush on him....best friend remember. I tried to hide the smile forming but failed miserably. " You're so into him," she yelled, laughing. "Shutup," I exclaim pushing her over. "So I'll take that as a yes to the bonfire," Kim says sitting back up. "Yeah I'll be there," I state focusing back on the show playing. "Good, I'll pick you up," she said satisfied getting up to leave. I told her bye and heard her car pull out of the driveway.

I sat alone enthralled by the show on the tv that I didn't even hear Sam and Emily arrive. I looked at my watch and it was about thirty minutes until Kim would return. I quickly say my hellos to Sam and Emily before bolting into my room. I changed into a pair of jeans, blouse, and my converses. I was excited for tonight for two reasons. Firstly, Kim told me that Jacob's dad Billy would be telling some legends. Second, Jacob was going to be there. That fact made me happy but also nervous. I couldn't help but feel a connection with him. I have never felt that way about another boy. It was like a gravitational pull.

A honk from outside pulled me from my thoughts. I grabbed a jacket, told Sam and Emily I'd see them later, and sprinted out to the car. The ride was very short, a walkable distance from the house. I could see the fire already going when we parked. Jared came to greet us..well Kim..and I left them to themselves. I said hey to everyone while looking for one person in particular. He was sitting on the ground near the fire. He smiled as I sat down next to him. "Hey," I said smiling back at him. "Hi," Jacob replied. "Did we miss anything," I asked looking around the bonfire. "You're just in time for the legends," He stated nodding towarda man who was sitting in a wheelchair on the opposite side of the fire. I took it that this man was Billy, his dad. Billy cleared his throat and everyone immediately became quiet and sat down around the fire.Once everyone was settled, he began. The stories were absolutely amazing. I have always loved hearing old legends and these were no exception. He spoke of how the Quileutes were descendents of wolves and how spirit warriors would turn into them to protect the villages. It was all so fascinating that I was completely oblivious to anything around me. I was brought back to reality by Leah screaming. I looked over at her and she was dripping wet. Paul stood behind her with a bucket laughing his butt off. "You're dead!" Leah screamed chasing after Paul.

I got up and walked away from the group, not wanting to be the next one to get soaked. I walked a little way down the beach a little bit until I came to a fallen tree and sat down. I wasn't far from the fire but just enough to be somewhat secluded from the group. The ocean waves washed up against the sand and the moonlight shone off the water. I was so mesmerized by the scene that I didn't hear someone walk up. "What you doing?" I heard beside me. I looked to see Jacob sitting there. "Just thinking," I replied giving him a smile. "About?" he asked returning the smile. It may have been dark but I could see that his smile was dazzling. "Life and it's many obstacles," I confess looking back out at the waves. "I understand that," he said looking at the waves as well. We remained silent for a moment just sitting. "So what are you doing out here?" I question, breaking the silence. "Just making sure you're ok," he replied. His answer caught me a little off guard. I glanced over at him and he was staring at me.

"Can I ask you for some advice?" he asked stilling keeping his eyes locked with mine. "Shoot." I reply. "Well remember when I came back? You don't know why I left do you?" he said. I remained silent and shake my head.He looked down at his hands and continued. "Well I liked this girl named Bella. When her boyfriend left her, I tried to get her myself. It seemed to be working, but then her boyfriend came back and she went back to him. You could say I was heartbroken," he explained rubbing the back of his neck. I felt sympathetic for Jacob. I could tell that it really hurt him but I was touched that he trusted me enough to tell me. I could relate to his pain but in a different way. "I understand being let down by a person you love. It's not an easy thing to have to deal with," I say, an image of my dad coming to mind. "When life breaks you down like that, what do you do?" he asked looking over at me. I pull my knees to my chest and wrap my arms loosely around them. "Well," I began after thinking about it," in my experience, one usually finds that when one door closes, another one opens." "How do you know if its something good behind the open door," Jacob questioned. "What's life without a little risk," I state shrugging my shoulders.

He stayed quiet, letting it my response sink in. His eyes smoldered and made my heart pick up speed. This was the most open he'd been with me since we met. I hope he picked up that Iwas the one waiting for him behind the "open door". Suddenly he started to lean closer to me. I hesitated but began leaning in too. We became closer and closer. I could feel his warm breath against my skin. My head was screaming to kiss him. We were inches apart, our lips almost touching. "Hayley! It's time to go," I heard Kim yell. I closed my eyes in frustrationand lean back over. I'm going to kill her, I thought. I re-open my eyes to see Jacob looking down at the ground. "I guess I'll see you later," I said touching him on the shoulder as I walk toward Kim and the others. I tell everyone goodbye and was driven home.

After giving Kim a little talking too and possibly a hit on the arm, I got ready for bed. I layed down looking at the ceiling, thinking about the night. The legends, Jacob, and the almost kiss swirled in my head. It was a great night. I was about drift off to sleep when I heard a knock on my window. I sat up in bed and looked out the window. I saw a shadow of a human. I cautiously walked to the window and realized it was Jacob. "Jacob? What in the world are you doing here," I asked. He leant his head in the window from his perch on the tree outside the window. "I forgot to tell you something," he stated. Then he grabbed the back of my neck gently and placed his lips to mine. It was wonderful. His lips were warm against my own. His breath was sweet. It seemed like they molded together. A perfect match. The kiss felt too short when he pulled away. "See ya tomorrow," he said smiling at me. I smiled back as he made his way down the tree and walked into the woods, waving to me when he reached the edge. I bit my lip thinking about the kiss and closed the window. Needless to say, I slept really good that night.
