Chapter 15:
We were on the road, and I wanted the dead silence in the car to desperately end.
"I, uh, didn't know you guys were cousins. You and Jaiden I mean." I said and he didn't say anything for a a minute or two.
It was so awkward, it kinda hurt.
"Are you going to tell me where your house is? He said all of a sudden.
And, It hit me, he'd been driving for a few minutes now with no conversation, all along he was waiting for me to give him directions. So strange, what did he wait all this time for, he could've asked sooner because clearly I'd forgotten.
"Oh. Yeah, sorry." I paused for a brief second to look at the area surrounding us and the street we were currently on. "You can take a right at the next stop." I finished and he nodded.
I really wanted him to say something, anything, because he might've missed out on the tension building in the air, but I hadn't. I was painfully aware of it.
"What's going on between you and Jaiden?" His question took me off guard and I hesitated before answering. Why was he asking, it was clearly none of his business and if he really wanted to know, he could ask his cousin.
"Why do you ask?" I asked and gave him a quick glance. It was satisfying to look at him because all this time I was too scared to do anything.
My shoulders were pent up with anxiety and he looked so relaxed. His face however, looked like he had a lot on his mind.
He shrugged and brushed his curiosity off, "Just wondering. You can answer the question." Wow, 'you can answer the question' Yes, of course I can answer the question. But will I? No.
"Nothing's going on between us. We're friends." I replied nonetheless, we had a conversation going and I didn't plan on messing it in any way.
"Friends." He scoffed. I pointed at a corner and he took a sharp turn onto a new road.
The rest of the ride was silent. All that sounded was the vibration coming from the car. After a while, he finally got to my door and I left the car without hesitation. That was one awkward car ride and I didn't favor it at all.
I got to the door and then I remembered I didn't have my keys.
Shit. I pulled out my phone and saw a text message notification floating on the screen. I opened it and saw that it was a text from mom.
"Me, Cory, and your dad had to leave for New York. There was an emergency with your grandparents. Don't worry about it, we'll be back on Monday at the latest. Sorry, it all happened really suddenly. You can stay home by yourself if you want, or stay next door at Sophie's. I've told her whats going on so there shouldn't be a problem. I'm really sorry and I love you." The text read. New York? Grandparents? NEXT DOOR, AT SOPHIES? IN THE SAME HOUSE WITH ACE!!?!
