Chapter 23:
Me and Ace continued dancing until the song ended. After, he looked at me if he understood whatever I felt without actually knowing anything. I smiled at him as the pang of jealousy returned, making me want something much, much stronger than a beer.
I asked him if he wanted one. He denied, so I started walking to the table I was going to before I saw Kris. I was also curious as to whether he was still there. I forbid myself from thinking about him. But the curiosity got the best of me so I looked around. The place where the girl and him had been standing was now empty, rid of any commotion related to the animate world. I got two beers, both for me, and wandered off more.
I unscrewed the cap of one of the beers and started drinking. I felt giddy about the idea of being drunk, of the cold liquid dissolving all the wrong in the world. Of forgetting Kris.
Tired and Satisfied, I finally gave up and started walking towards the water. I stood just before the line where sand met water and nestled my toes deep into the nature of earth. It felt cool and peaceful, like poking into a cloud of insensibility. I was a decent amount far from the rest of the party and it felt good. It felt mesmerizing to just stop for a second and listen. Listen to the almost peaceful sound of the waves crashing, I could almost hear the rest of the world moving. Life in its purest form. However, the peace was disturbed when I heard a sound right behind me. The sound of sand overlapping
I turned around to Kris. My breath hitched and it was as if I knew he'd come. His eyes narrowed, sand falling slowly and aimlessly from his hand. The lean build of his muscles rising and falling, glistening in all their glory under the moonlight. I was trying really hard to not get distracted by his naked torso, or that abdomen that called my attention. He walked towards me.
Kris
Her eyes flashed a look of surprise and alarm before settling into the unknown and as much as I wanted to know what she was thinking, I couldn't. I was sure she'd seen me earlier when I was bidding goodbye to Delaney. God knows what she must've assumed. I had the urge to clarify what she must've thought then. She'd been on my mind a lot more lately and it was bothering me to the core. I guess, seeing her wouldn't help but I couldn't help it when I saw her walking towards the water.
The moonlight spilled on us like warm honey, lighting up the emeralds in her eyes; they fiercely took me in as I approached. Her breathing seemed to change, was I causing that?
I rubbed off the remaining sand in my hand, letting the air take it up into the night sky, wind whistling its call to the sea. A hush whisper invited me closer to the water. A poisonous addiction is what it was, her and the water. They both held a solitary demeanor that welcomed me.
She pursed her lips and finally broke off the eye contact. Glancing down at her feet before rising up again, but not to my eyes. I could almost feel the hunger in her eyes as they tore through my torso. I couldn't help smiling, she was totally checking me out.
She lead the loose strands of her hair behind her ear. "What are you doing here?" She asked in her velvet like voice.
I smirked, "The real question is, what are you doing here?" I was next to her now. Her eyes met mine before I saw her swallow and she turned her body completely turned towards the open sea of possibilities. We stood side by side, in anticipation every time a wave came in, seeing if it'd reach us.
