Chapter 5:
For some odd reason, I spent quite a bit of time trying to decipher Ace's reasons in asking me about mine and Delilah's friendship. I don't why I thought that there must be a deep reason, I found the question out of the blue. Why didn't he just ask Delilah? Why did he wait till we got to the car to ask?
I shook all these questions out of my mind as I stepped into the dimly lit hallway of my house. I was just overthinking the situation, he was just trying to make conversation, I told myself and called out for Cory. Either I was the first one to get home, which wasn't unusual since mom and dad were always coming home at different times, they had different schedules and honestly, sometimes I didn't even know what everyone was up to. But, It was unusual for Cory to not be home, he came straight home after schools except the days he had wrestling or, in rare cases, decided to do something with his friends.
I let out a breath and walked into the living room and dropped my bag on the couch and made my way upstairs, turning on lights as I passed.
Wednesday
"I have really exciting news! I can't wait !!! Wait for me after school okay? - Delilah" I read the note left on my locker by Delilah. What is it that she wanted to tell me? Was it about Ace? I peeled the sticky note off the locker and stuffed it in my back pocket after folding it up and opened my locker. I had a minute left to get my stuff for Bio and get to class. I looked at the bottom of the locker and rummaged through the stray papers and proceeded to check the top shelf. I had forgotten my biology textbook at home and I needed it in class for an assignment. I silently cursed at myself for forgetting and shut and locked the locker. I made my way through the crowd to sixth period.
"For today, you will be working in pairs, using your textbooks to answer these questions. Due at the end of class, all forty questions? Cool. I'll be assigning new groups, the person sitting next to you will be your partner for this assignment. Oh! I almost forgot, we have a new student. Mrs. Zing cooed before walking to the door and opening it, standing with her back against the door to hold it open. My head was on the table, in my arms, too bored to actually care about new groups or new students or lame biology assignments. I heard the door close and a few whispers among my classmates.
"Mr. Zachary, please introduce yourself." Mrs. Zing continued. Silence, and then what I heard next resulted in my jerking my head up to look towards the front of the class, and what I saw, really took me by surprise.
"Hey, I'm Ace." Was all he said with a small smile and a distinct glint in his eyes as they roamed the class, finally landing on me. He held eye contact for what felt like a while, but I was sure, only a couple of seconds. And I just stared dumbfoundedly, not ready to believe what was happening.
Ace was in this class. Ace was a student at Warren Township. My rude neighbor, my best friends soon to be boyfriend, was in biology with me. I didn't have a problem with him but I didn't enjoy his company either. It was something about him, he didn't give out any creepy vibes or anything but, there was just something I couldn't put my finger onto. I looked away before he could catch me staring and let loose a breath I didn't know I had bottled up. I looked towards the back of the room and decided to put my head down again, only looking in the opposite direction of where Ace stood. I noticed a couple of girls checking him out shamelessly, maybe even drooling. How Typical.
"Great. Now that that's settled, let's start. Everyone up, stand against the wall." A few signs and groans enveloped the room and everyone left their seats to line up against one of the two walls. I zipped my bag up and hung it on one shoulder and held my binder and books in my arms and waited for her to call my name.
