Nico's POV
"Hey, Hazel," I called out cheerily, spotting my half sister chatting with Piper in the strawberry fields. I trotted over and squatted next to the two girls who, up until this point, had been happily discussing makeup techniques.
"Oh, hey, Neeks," Hazel said halfheartedly. "Sorry I haven't gotten to spend all that much time with you since I've been here. I just wanted to catch up with my friends, you know?"
"Yeah, it's just that Jason and I have been super busy, what with going back and forth from both camps," Piper shrugged.
"Why don't you go talk to Percy?" Hazel suggested, as if she were the older one.
"He and Annabeth are in New Rome," I reminded her.
"Than go talk to Will or something. Watch a movie. I don't really care, kay, Neeks?"
"Fine. Bye, guys." I trudged away, a tear creeping to the corner of my eye as I heard the two girls happily resume their conversation.
I found Will in the infirmary, where he spent most of his time, stitching up Clarisse's leg. "You put that needle anywhere else, I'll stick a needle in you," she glared.
"Point taken," Will laughed.
"Hey, Will!" I grinned, approaching my boyfriend. "How's everything going?" Will wiped one of his curly golden locks off of his forehead.
"Okay," he shrugged. "I wanted to get the day off, but we've been swamped. The Ares cabin got into a fight about the best way to hold a sword, and now they're flooding in." He shot Clarisse a first class glare.
"It's not my fault those dimwads can't hold a sword," she sighed. "I can't believe they're actually my siblings."
"Well, you're done complaining to me. You're free to go, as long as you take it easy."
"I'm Clarisse LaRue, I don't take it easy," she told Will. She tested out her leg and darted away, as if Will had never needed to perform surgery in her leg.
"So, are you ready to go somewhere? We could go watch a movie or something in my cabin."
"Sorry, death boy, I've got to keep working. There are a lot more Clarisses out there. Maybe later, kay?" Will touseled my obsidian hair. "I'll be off duty in about five hours. I'll come and find you."
"Bye, Will," I sighed.
No one had time for me anymore. Percy and Annabeth were off in New Rome, getting ready to go off to college there. Leo and Calypso were working on something together, bundled up in Bunker 9 all day, only coming out to go to sleep, and even sometimes they would go days without seeing daylight. Piper and Jason were working together on getting all of the gods recognized, which was a grueling task that ate up much of their time. Even Hazel, (she and Frank were visiting Camp Half- Blood, like they loved to do) who I thought I could always rely on to talk to, was busy visiting her other friends, the ones who weren't her brother. Even Will was to busy for me now, with his duties in the infirmary. To everyone, I was dependable. They could always talk to me, and I'd understand. My days of leaving, of walking out, were over. Well, maybe they were wrong.
Will's POV
"What's wrong, Will?" My sister Kayla asked, slinging a friendly arm over my shoulder.
"I completely blew off Nico when no one else was there for him," I sighed. "I would have taken the day off, or at least left early, but we're swamped."
"Well," Kayla smirked. "One camper seems to work double everyone else, and I think that he deserves a nice break from work and do something that he wants to do for a change."
"Are you talking about me?" I laughed.
"Of course, silly. Now get out there and find the love of your life."
"Are you absolutely sure I can have the time off?"
"Yes!" she shoved me toward the open door, which was letting in a merry stream of sunlight. "See you later."
"Bye."
I found Piper and Hazel lying in the middle of the strawberry fields, with daisy crowns in their hair. "Hey, guys," I greeted them. "Have you seen Nico at all today?"
"Well, he stopped by earlier in the morning, but he hasn't been back since," Hazel said, propping herself up on her elbows. "Why, are you looking for him?"
"Yeah, and I've checked around the whole camp, and he hasn't been seen by anyone since he left the infirmary. " Hazel furrowed her brow.
"Well, I wish you the best of luck." I waved goodbye and dashed away, worry forming in a tight ball inside my heart.
I had checked almost everywhere in the camp. He wasn't in the sword arena stabbing his stygian iron sword into some hay dummies, nor was he in the stables, trying fruitlessly to get the pegusi to like him. He hadn't been sulking moodily in his dark cabin, or trying to get up the climbing wall without getting burned to death. No one had seen him since he left the infirmary. There was only one place I hadn't checked, and I was afraid to think he was there. Whenever a camper first came to the camp, they were all told one thing; never go into the forest alone. Yet it seemed that was exactly what Nico had done. The forest was stocked with dangerous monsters that could be fun for a challenge, but if you got hurt, your body wouldn't be found until a week later, and there would be so many bites taken out of you it was almost impossible to identify the body.
In preparation, I grabbed my bow and quiver from my cabin, and an extra sword for good measure. My preferred weapon was a bow and arrow, but it was hard to nock an arrow when a hydra was sneaking up behind you.
I stood at the edge of the forest, listening to the howls of the monsters echoing through the trees. I was pretty sure Chiron had restocked it sometime last night, so the monsters were fresh and looking for blood. Making sure there was nothing right in front of me waiting to kill me, I ventured inside the forest.
"Nico?" I called. "Nico, I know you're in here!" I heard a rustling of leaves behind me. I spun around, hoping to see Nico, but it was only a squirrel, cheeks stuffed full of acorns in preparation for the quickly coming winter. I groaned and continued searching the forest.
I found Nico sitting atop Zeus' fist with his head in his hands, his shoulders shaking with silent tears. Going somewhere?" I asked. He sat up at looked around.
"W- Will? What are you doing here?"
"Finding you. What are you doing here?"
"Leaving. For good. No one cares about me anymore. Why did I think it was a good idea to come back?" He looked up at me with a tear stained face, clear droplets of water still running down his face.
"People care about you, Neeks. You know I took time off from the infirmary to come and see you. I've never done that, like, ever."
"R- really?" Nico sniffed, wiping his eyes on his black sleeve.
"Of course. I love you, death boy. Now, why don't we go back to your cabin and watch one of those movies you were talking about?" Nico gave me a watery smile.
"That sounds great."
"I can't believe Augustus died! Hazel Grace must have been heartbroken!"
"I had no idea the Son of Death liked those movies," I smirked.
"They're always so cute," he yawned. I pulled him closer to me so that his head was resting on my chest.
"You tired, Neeks?" I asked.
"No," he muttered.
"You've had a long day, you can sleep if you want." I paused for a moment, waiting for his response. "Death boy?" I glanced down at my chest to find Nico sleeping soundly on my chest, his arms wrapped around my waist. I flicked on another movie, settling in until Nico woke up.
Hi everyone! I have recently learned that all my endings are exactly the same, so sorry about that. But a big thank you to one of my friends for giving me this amazing idea!
