“You’re resigning?!” Richard Colton, the chief of surgery in Seattle Heart Hospital exclaimed to Raine. “Why is this so sudden? Are you not contented with the contract? Just tell us. We can always make new arrangements.”
“It’s not like that, Chief.” Raine explained. “You see I’ve been here for five years and there’s not even a thing that I regret for working here. I just miss my family.”
“Then, all you need is a vacation.” Richard insisted.
“You don’t understand, Chief. I wanna go back home.”
Richard looked at Raine for sometime while contemplating whether or not he’ll approve of Raine’s resignation letter. “If you go, you’ll forego all the things you’ve built here. Your name, all the opportunities will go to waste. You’ve worked hard to be in this world, Dr. Ellamil. I’m not accepting your resignation. Instead, I’m giving you three months off. Go home. Take a vacation. And if you think you’ll no longer happy here, I’ll accept this letter, but you know, Seattle Heart is always open for you.”
“But, Chief-”
“I believe, I’ve made my self clear. ”
“You are unbelievable, Richard Colton!” Raine said with amusement in her face more than anger. Her chief of surgery is more than just a colleague to her. He’s more like a father. He was her mentor and a second father. It’s not easy to decide on leaving her job. But she knows deep in her heart it’s what she wants. But it wouldn’t her to consider the old man’s offer. “Fine. I’ll consider. But whatever happens, it’s still my choice.”
“Ofcourse.”
“I’m leaving then, Chief. See when I see you.”
“Enjoy your vacation, Dr. Ellamil.” She hugged the old man and left the room. Excitement flooded her vein. She’s going home, finally! After ten years, she’s going home. She misses her family so much. She misses her old friends. She just misses home.
She drove back to her house and started preparing for her things. She was busy packing her things when she received a call.
“Hello?”
“Hi, doc!”
“Yes, who’s this?” Raine asked.
“It’s me, Adrian.”
“Adrian? Oh, right! Hey, how are you?” Adrian was her patient. After that, the guy asked him out which she refused. Still, he won’t budge off. She told him about patient-doctor relationship, but he just shrugged his shoulder about it.
“I’m still hoping to have a dinner with you, doc. hoping this time you’ll accept.” There’s a hint of hope in his voice.
“Adrian, I told you. I can’t. You have to understand.”
“God, you’re one tough woman.”
“I know right. C’mon, Adrian. You are a good-looking and charming guy. I’m pretty sure you have lots of ladies swooning over you.”
“Thanks, Raine. Guess I just had my heart broken.”
“Ha-ha. Want me to refer you to a great cardio-surgeon?”
“Is she as great as you?”
“Even better.”
“Nah, I don’t think so.”
“Get over yourself, Adrian.” She smiled.
“I’m just kidding. But if you ever change your mind, you know where to find me.”
