Miraculously, Elena managed to fall asleep after all. The whole night, she had dreams about Klaus - and what was frightening, they were no nightmares; they were very nice and pleasant dreams. The sound of her phone ringing woke her up in the morning. Still sleepy, she groped for the phone, and convinced that it was Stefan, she answered it without checking the display and reading the name of the caller.
'Good morning,' she muttered.
'Good morning,' the voice on the other side replied, and it didn't resemble Stefan's voice at all.
In that moment, Elena was completely awake. 'Klaus. What do you want again?'
'I just want to make sure you didn't do anything silly yesterday.'
'No. I didn't.'
'Excellent,' Klaus praised her.
'Why do you even care about that so much?' Elena didn't understand it. 'As if you had to be afraid of Stefan.'
Klaus laughed from the bottom of his heart. 'Of course I'm not afraid of him. I just don't want to brag with something that's not 100% official.'
'It's 0% official,' Elena corrected him.
'Oh please, don't lie to me. I heard your heart speed up after the kiss. Something is drawing you to me.'
Elena had never met anyone with such an amount of arrogance before. Where has the vulnerable soul from last night gone? The one that declared his love to her?
'That's not true,' Elena defended herself.
'We both know it is,' Klaus didn't let her brush him off. 'Well... The truth will come out sooner or later anyway. Have a nice day, Elena,' he said and hung up.
Shocked and upset, Elena stared at her phone, now all dead.
Then her alarm clock rang. It was time to get up and get ready for school.
The whole morning, Elena racked her brain over what Klaus had meant by the truth coming out soon, and also over how the hell she was going to manage to stay balanced in front of everyone and pretend nothing was wrong.
