Elena's hand was shaking when she was putting the mobile phone to her ear.

'Hello?'

'Elena.' Klaus' voice stabbed her heart like a dagger. 'Where are you?'
'Ehm...' she cleared her throat.
'Before you come up with some stupid lie, think twice whether lying to me pays off. I will find you anyway,' he warned her in a humorous tone.
'I'm at the Salvatores,' confessed Elena. 'Alaric Saltzman is celebrating his birthday today.'
'I understand,' uttered Klaus.
'What?' marvelled Elena. She must have misheard.
'I am saying that I understand it. That fan of nonsensely interpreted history is almost like your family. And family always comes first.'
'Does that mean that I can stay here?' Elena was shocked. 'I don't have to go with you?'
'What kind of a man would I be if I dragged you from a family celebration? Just stay there and enjoy it. And give Alaric my heartfelt regards and wishes.'
'I'd better not do that,' growled Elena.
'We'll go out some other time. And Elena...'
'Yes?' Her forehead broke out in sweat. 
'Don't forget to keep your mouth shut.'
'You don't need to worry about that. I really have no intention of telling Stefan about it.'
'You have no intention of telling me about WHAT?' she heard behind her back. During the phone call she hadn't even realised that Stefan was standing there. An OMG ran through her head. How much could he have heard?
'I have to go,' she mumbled to the phone, she ended the call and threw the mobile into her purse.

'Would you finally tell me what's going on?' Stefan looked quite angry.
'I... I c-c-can't,' stuttered Elena.
'Elena, I can't recognise you. You never acted like this...' Stefan narrowed his eyes suspiciously. 'Is someone threatening you?'
'No, I... OK then, I'll tell you,' Elena breathed out and she stooped her shoulders in defeat. 'But it needs to stay JUST BETWEEN YOU AND ME, do you understand?' She waited for Stefan's nod. 'One of my classmates is crazy about you and she keeps bombarding me with questions about how she can chat you up, what you're into and so on.'
'But... you're the one who's dating me!'
'I know,' giggled Elena. She had to admit that the excuse lacked logic. 'Isn't that creepy? She's totally insane.'
'So... She's threatening you now? Should I compell her to leave you alone?'
'No, it's fine. She doesn't stand a chance anyway. Because you're only mine,' said Elena, she stood up and kissed Stefan on the lips.
'You're right,' he answered with a smile. 'I'm only yours. Forever.'
He unwittingly remembered that he had promised an eternal love to someone else a long time ago. Katherine Pierce. And he didn't keep his promise. Stefan Salvatore knew very well how tricky the word 'forever' actually is.
