Part 44

Elena headed straight home because she somehow needed to feel the safety of her home. She found Jenna there sitting in the kitchen and stuffing herself with ice cream. She had a blank expression, which surprised Elena a bit, and it also reminded her that she wasn't the only person in the world struggling with something and dealing with a lot of issues.
'Hello,' she greeted Jenna. 'May I join you?' she asked and she pointed to the ice cream. Jenna just nodded silently and handed the spoon over to Elena without looking at her; she just kept staring in front of her as though thinking about something, very focused. 
'Uhm,' Elena cleared her throat. 'So, do you want to talk about it?' she asked, she reached for the ice cream and put a spoonful of it into her mouth.
'Not really,' retorted Jenna. 'And what about you, why do you need an ice cream therapy as well?' She finally looked at Elena and she noticed traces of tears and smudged mascara.
'Well...' started Elena hesitatingly. Of course, she couldn't tell her aunt the whole truth, but maybe she could confide at least something to her. 'I broke up with Stefan.'
'You did?'
'Yeah,' nodded Elena and she helped herself to more ice cream. 'I don't love him anymore. Or at least that's what I thought.' She sighed. Everything was so complicated that she didn't even have a clue how to explain it to Jenna.
'Is there someone else?' Jenna was curious.
Elena had to make a face because it was funny how quickly Jenna revealed that. 'Something like that.'
'Stefan was a very nice boy and you two were great together,' said Jenna.
'I know.'
'But that's no guarantee. Love is tricky... And it most likely never lasts forever,' she complained.
'Don't tell me Alaric dumped you,' Elena got scared.
'Not yet. But I'm afraid he has a lover.'
Elena's eyes popped out. 'Alaric? That's not like him at all. How did you come to that conclusion?'
'He's been so secretive lately... I know that something's going on and he's keeping it from me... I'm fed up with the lies. If he really loved me, he wouldn't keep things from me.'
Elena knew right away what this was about. And she also knew that Alaric was keeping the truth about the existence of vampires from Jenna purely for her own good. Therefore, she had to take his side.
'He definitely has a good reason for this behaviour. I'm sure he doesn't want to hurt you. And I totally doubt he's cheating on you. He would never do that.'
'I hope you're right,' Jenna smiled a little. 'Thanks for the support, Elena, I'm glad that I confided in you after all. And now return the spoon,' she said and took the spoon from Elena. Then they both burst into laughter.
'Oh my god,' Elena was shaking with laughter, just like Jenna who couldn't stop laughing. Elena enjoyed the rare moment when she could forget about all her worries and she suddenly had to ask herself whether men really were worth the nerves.
