Bonnie told Elena about everything that she missed while she wasn't in Mystic Falls. And there was a lot of that. Many stories were related to Klaus and Elena jerked every time she heard his name. She even looked back over her shoulder in fear a couple of times, as if she were afraid that he was watching her from somewhere. She could almost feel his closeness and it was as if Bonnie mentioning his name was calling him to come.
In the end, Elena wasn't that far from the truth because when she was going back home from Bonnie's that evening, her head full of news and gossip, she bumped into Klaus, who was standing nearby as if by accident, and he approached her pretendedly casually.
'So it is true. You're back,' he said in his typical voice, which Elena had always found sexy, yet at the same time terrifyingly dangerous. After all, a voice is just like the one it belongs to. At least it was like that with Klaus.
'I am,' she uttered weakly, she turned around and headed back to Bonnie's house door. But he was faster and he stood in her way.
'I'm not even worth an ordinary hello?' he asked pretty offendedly. 'You leave me for such a long time, you completely disappear from my life and now you just march right in front of my face and you don't even say hello?' There was a mixture of disappointment, grief, anger and resistance in his eyes. When Elena thought about it, that was typical for him too.
'As far as I know, you marched in front of me, not the other way round,' Elena snapped at him harder than she had intended and she tried to walk around him, but Klaus grasped her wrist tightly and he almost crushed it as he got carried away. But he soon loosened the grip and looked deeply into Elena's eyes where her feelings were mirrored more than perfectly. Fear, rage, broken trust and the will to see something good in him, despite everything he's ever done to her.
'I admit that you're right,' he shrugged. 'I was following you. But I needn't have done that if you had let me know you were coming back.'
'Why should I?' She did what she could to maintain her fighting tone.
'Because when you were leaving, you were my girlfriend,' he replied simply and he drew a restless strand of her chocolate-brown hair from her face very gently. During his tender touch, both fire and frost went through Elena. She instinctively jumped away and Klaus sighed. 'Has anything changed, love? Has too much changed?'
A positive answer was suggesting itself, but Elena wasn't capable of talking. Not when she was swayed by so many contradictory feelings, to the strongest of which belonged the desire for more of Klaus' freezingly burning touches and the desire to get a white oak stake and run it through his chest.
'I've got to get many things clear in my mind,' she mumbled in the end and on purpose, she sank her look in the ground because she had an idea of what was going to come.
He got angry, but this time he didn't express it physically. No violence, no stern tone, no rage in his eyes. Suddenly, he was very expressionless and somehow resigned. 'I thought you had enough time for that when you were gone. That was the reason why you left after all, wasn't it?'
She nodded. 'Yes. And I really tried to find out how things were between us, but...' She made a long break during which she dared to stop staring at the pavement and look at Klaus, who was waiting patiently. 'I still need more time,' she breathed out in the end. 'Please, if you still care about me, at least a little bit, give me some time.'
'I'll give you the whole eternity. But what do you mean by that "if I still care about you at least a little bit" nonsense? You know that I care about you!' Anger was back in his eyes and voice.
'You do?' Elena curled her lip doubtingly. 'And what about that model you've been running around at night lately, killing people?'
Klaus wriggled. He had known that Elena would ask him about it, yet he still wasn't ready. 'She's just fun. And I've only killed one. She's killed the rest. She's got a bit out of control, that's all.'
'Out of your control,' hissed Elena. 'You've turned her into a vampire and you're responsible for her. And she's not a toy, Klaus. It's outrageous, the way you treat women.'
Klaus rolled his eyes. 'I don't treat the important ones badly.' Another sigh. 'Take as much time as you need.' Then he turned on his heel and disappeared in a dark alley.
