Elena was staring at Klaus through her tears, trying to somehow organise all the thoughts and feelings in her head. She didn't even understand herself. She would love to blame her being a vampire for that, but the truth was that she already had issues with making decisions and understanding her feelings when she was human. It took her forever before she finally brought herself to break up with Matt because she really liked him a lot and she didn't want to lose him, yet at the same time she wasn't truly in love with him. Then she was sure that she found love with Stefan and she believed that when the right time came, he would turn her into a vampire and they would stay together forever. After that, she, for an incomprehensible reason, fell in love with Klaus and all that precious true love and eternity spent with Stefan suddenly faded. However, now she could imagine getting back together with him and being happy and satisfied with him again. Just the way she could imagine dating Klaus - but that, all of a sudden, seemed like a crazy fantasy rather than her realistic future. She was incredibly confused, she was fighting with the chaos in her heart, with more and more tears and with the urge to either kill or kiss Klaus, while she actually didn't feel the desire to do either of those things, yet at the same time, she desperately wanted to do both.
'Klaus, I...' she murmured. 'For a while, I want to stop thinking of Stefan has or hasn't done, of what you and I have together and if we can be together, and of whether I can control myself when I drink from someone's throat. I can't do this anymore! I need at least a while of peace, alone, to sort out my thoughts... Will you give me that please?'
Klaus watched her frantically firing off all those things and he wondered whether it would be better to simply compel her so that she wouldn't feel any of that, make her decision easier and save her the pain. In the end, however, he told himself that he couldn't compel her again if she didn't want it. He couldn't manipulate her; that wasn't the way to win her heart. Bonnie was right, he had to make her love him because she wanted to. He didn't know if he was going to use the best or the worst sides of his personality, but he swore to himself that he would achieve it.
'Take as much time as you need,' he answered in a peaceful tone.
'Thank you,' Elena breathed out, a bit surprised. She wiped the tears from her face using her sleeve and she slowly headed away. 'This is not the last time we're talking to each other,' she promised him.
'I know,' Klaus smiled roguishly. 'I wouldn't survive it if it were.'
'You've survived a thousand years and you've faced much more deadly things than me,' noted Elena.
'Don't underestimate yourself, love,' Klaus gave her another from his dazzling smiles of a cute bad guy. 'You have bigger power than you think.'
She just shrugged and in the next second, she was gone.
Klaus wasn't lying when he told her that she had bigger power than she thought. At least she definitely had it over him.
