"And you- you just happened to have this laying around. You though 'hey this is definitely something I need to pack.' You dork." I stare in disbelief at the wrinkled paper Rina just unfolded. Written in many different colors consisting of markers, pens, and pencil was a long list that she has apparently been saving for a few years. Rina shrugs and tries to smooth out the piece of paper.
"Well I just thought it'd be good to make a list. Always good to be prepared."
"Dork," I repeat. I read over her shoulder at her list. Some of the things I could hardly read because she scribbled them down in a rush. Some of them seemed easy enough, classics such as air horns cleverly places and Saran Wrap in doorways, but there were very strange ones on here too and some that look a little complicated.
"Kool Aid shower? What does that even mean?" I question as I squint at her handwriting.
"Oh you unscrew the shower head then take a pouch of Kool Aid and pour it in there then screw it back on. I thought that would be funny but it would probably only work on one of them because they would warn each other."
"Okay and then there's this nail polish one. Didn't we already do nail polish?"
"I don't think we did."
"But I thought we-"
"Shh. Hush." She places her hands on my face and covers my mouth. All I have to do is glare at her and she immediately pulls them away.
"It doesn't matter if we already did it. This is color changing nail polish. It goes on clear and then changes colors in the sunlight."
"Hm clever. Well you've definitely got a good list here. Which do you think we should start with?"
"I was thinking start off small then slowly work up to the more complicated ones. Do you know if Jacob uses a hair dryer everyday?"
"I think he does after every shower but I don't know for sure." I'm almost afraid to hear what she says next but I still ask anyway. "Why?"
"Well if Jacob likes flour so much, we should give him some flour."
She looks at the wall with a smile.
"That sounded really ominous," I whisper. Her smile disappears.
"It was supposed to," she replies.
"I'll say it again. You are a dork."
"Ya but so are you."
"Unfortunately. So how are we going to do this?"
By dinner time that night we have everything planned and ready to go. We walk down to dinner together trying not to smile or give anything away. Tonight we were having my moms spaghetti and meatballs- she froze a giant container of it for us and insisted that we bring it- so I was in charge of boiling the noodles and heating up the meatballs. Jacob and David sat in the kitchen as Rina and I warmed everything up. As usual Jay has retreated to his room. The others have tried to convince him that he doesn't need to constantly hide up there but he just ignores them. The only time I see him is at dinner and when we go to the beach.
"You guys are taking so long," David whines.
"I'm hungry," says Jacob. He gets up and walks over to where I was pouring the spaghetti into the strainer and grabs a noodle.
"Hot," he yells as soon as it's in his mouth.
"That's what you get. Why are you even in here? Go bother someone else."
He mumbles something but I can't hear what it was. I'm sure it's nothing nice. I sneak a glance at Rina and she winks at me. On cue I "trip" and spill some of the spaghetti. Without hesitation Jacob and David do as we hoped they would; they rush forward to help me up and make sure I'm okay.
"I'm going to the bathroom," Rina announces loudly. David turns to at her as she dashes from the room but I quickly pull his attention back towards me.
"Oh my goodness owww. My foot hurts so much," I cry. David starts picking up the noodles that are flung across the floor and Jacob starts to help me up.
"Are you alright?" he asks. "What did you even fall over?"
"I guess I'm just really clumsy. Thanks," I reply. I dramatically stretch out my foot, leaning heavily on Jacob. I have to repress my laughter at the fact that they're falling for this. Rina returns but doesn't say anything as she walks back over to the stove.
"Do you not care that Mira just fell over?" David asks her incredulously. She shrugs but I can tell she's hiding a smile.
"I'll get her some ice," she says, walking over to the fridge. She grabs an ice cube, wraps it in a napkin, then hands it to me.
"I should probably finish making dinner," she says, walking back towards the stove.
"No that's okay. We can manage," Jacob says quickly. Once they turn their back Rina and I high five. Having them make our plates was just a bonus that we really hadn't planned on. Making sure they're not listening I lean in and whisper to her. "Everything done?"
"Yep. Great acting by the way."
"Thanks," I reply with a hair flip.
"Oh by the way I think Jay might've seen me upstairs but I'm not sure." She says it so quickly and quietly I almost don't understand what she says. Before I can question he further, though, Jacob announces that dinner is ready.
The rest of dinner goes smoothly without much conversation. Whenever the boys weren't paying attention we would share evil grins. Jacob, I think, was starting to notice something was up though. He kept glaring suspiciously at us. David, on the other hand, didn't notice anything. He was too focused on his food to even look at anything but his plate.
"This is delicious Mira. You definitely need to tell your mom that she should teach me how to make these meatballs," he would repeat every once in awhile. David and Jacob weren't the ones I was worried about though. Jay had decided to join us for dinner and he was the one I was most worried about ratting us out. Not only had he possibly seen Rina but he was also the only one who is probably clever enough to realize what we're up to. He kept squinting at Rina then would shift his gaze over to Jacob. Whenever he caught me nervously staring at him my face would flush red and I quickly looked away. I was about to stand up and put my bowl in the sink but Jacob abruptly jumps up and points his finger at us.
"You two are up to something," he yells. David finally stops licking his plate and looks up curiously.
"I don't know what you are referring to," Rina says with a sickly sweet voice.
"We have been perfect angels all day," I say as I stand up and bat my eyelashes. Jacob raises an eyebrow but doesn't say anything. I glance over at Jay again to see if he was going to tattle on us. Instead he's smiling with his eyes focused on the table.
"How's your ankle?" David suddenly asks me. Now he looks curious too. I freeze, not expecting that question. I take a little too long to answer.
"Er it's still a bit sore but feeling a lot better thanks."
I quickly walk into the kitchen to avoid further questioning. Rina joins me seconds later and then the other three follow closely behind.
"I know what you're up too," Jacob whispers. I rinse off my dish without looking at him.
"I don know what you're talking about," I reply.
"You wanted us to think you were injured. You tripped on purpose hoping we would be your servants the rest of the night," David says with a small frown. Jacob nods in agreement. Jay is still smirking at the floor. I hear Rina sigh quietly in relief.
"That's obviously what we were doing," she says quickly.
"Darn guess I'll just have to suffer with only one servant for tonight," I say and lean on Rina.
"Um excuse you I prefer the term maid."
"Maids clean. You're my slave."
"Jerk."
"You've only just made up and you're already scheming against us. I'm watching you two," Jacob tells us before leaving the room. David glares at us one last time before leaving too. Jay finally looks up at us, still smiling. He opens his mouth to say something but Rina puts her finger to her lips to silence him. He just shakes his head and walks away.
"Ya he definitely saw me. Let's just hope he keeps his mouth shut," Rina says as he leaves.
"I think we better flour him too. Just because I feel like it's only fair," I say after some consideration. She gives me a hopeful look which I am quick to squash.
"Don't read too much into it. I just think it's makes sense to prank all three of them."
"Whatever you say. Come on let's go see what we can do."
"Oh I'm not going with you. You're my slave so therefore you shall go do it for me. I'll be waiting here."
She looks like she wants to argue but doesn't say another word.
When she returns a few minutes later her face is bright red. I raise my eyebrow and she shakes her head, sitting down in the chair across from me. I hold out a spoon and shove the tub of chocolate- chocolate chip ice cream towards her. She takes a large spoonful and shoves it in her mouth.
"Well Jacob is in the shower and his dryer is filled with flour. David's in the living room watching tv; his pillowcase is all floured up. I tried to sneak into Jay's room but he was in there and caught me. He promised not to tell but it was still kinda embarrassing," she reports.
"Sounds good," I say. Then something occurs to me. "Do you think David will be smart enough to figure we put flour in and on his pillowcase?"
"Nah. I sprinkled some onto his brush too so he'll think that that's the prank and that he's safe. He won't suspect a thing."
"You're an evil genius." I smirk at our handiwork. I may have been reluctant at first to join in on this but I have to admit that I'm already having a lot of fun- and it's only just begun.
"I'll learned from the best," Rina replies with a knowing look at me. As I pull the ice cream back towards me and dip my spoon into the deliciousness, we hear a loud scream.
"Should we run?" Rina asks nervously and starts to get up. I shrug, not too concerned.
"Hiding won't do much. He'll find us eventually so we might as well just sit here and continue enjoying our ice cream."
Rina sat back down. Within seconds Jacob ran down the stairs and burst into the kitchen with a towel wrapped around his waist. His whole face is pasty white. He starts to say something but I can't hear him over Rina and I's laughing.
"This is so not funny!" he yells over us.
"But it is!" Rina yells back as she gasps for breath. Tears start to blur my vision when David walks in to see what's going on and immediately falls the the floor clutching his stomach.
"I hate you both so much! Now I have to go take another shower. Oh you'll so pay for this!" Jacob shouts. He stomps out of the room, clutching his towel up and his cheeks slightly pink.
"Love you too!" I yell after him. This is definitely a great start to this and I can't wait until David finds his surprise we left him.
