I thought the choking sound came from him, but nope... it was me. There inside the trunk was a crap load of Spike's baby stuff. His mother had boxed it away in hope that in the future he would have it, she said so herself. On top of all this stuff was a letter to Spike written by his mother.
Dear Brent,
It seems that you have found your things. I had hopes that you will keep these and maybe one day give them to your children when that time comes. Having you was the best thing that your father and i have ever done. I loved to look in your eyes and see the way that they would light up at the smallest things. Get a good girl and settle down, and stay out of trouble! P.S. Stay away from your uncle, he is bad news. The way him and your father fight just isn't normal. I want you to do something for me Brent. Go out behind the house to the shed . Under the couch there will be a peice of the floor that will come up, i marked it with a knife. There are important files that i stashed in there hoping no one but you would find. They are very important so keep them close. I hope that you will not need to use them, but if you do they should help. I love you baby boy!
Love mom
" I didn't know your name was Brent." Really Avery, that is the first thing you say? He didn't say anything, he just nodded. I reached down and slowly wrapped my arms around him as he sat there. This was bad, really bad. I know how much he loved his mother so this was really hurting him. "Spike, this letter is the answer to everything. We need to go back to the shed and see if it is still there, come on." I gently pull him up and close the trunk. "The stuff will be here when we get back and you can go through them. We need to see if those files are still there."
He still had not said a word. Just nodding his head when he was supposed to and letting me pull him along. I really hope we don't run into my mom, he didn't need that right now. I think he needed space but at the same time i don't think he wants that. I don't want him to feel like i am pushing him so i said nothing still. Just holding his hand and being here with him silently, letting him know i was there for whatever he needed me for.
About ten minutes later we make it to the shed and step inside. "She said couch, but there isn't one here?"
"I took it out but kept the seats for a cusion on my bed." He speaks! Thank god, i was getting worried here. He slides the desk out of the way and crouches on the floor. "I think it's here. The wood is all messed up but the single groove here is the deepest one."
He takes a pocket knife out and picks at the floor. All of a sudden the plank pops out and he puts his hand in the space and latches on to something. His eyes lock with mine and and i can see hesitation, there is no telling whats in that folder. This could change everything. "Go ahead Spike, pull it out ." He takes a deep breath and pulls out the file.
We sat there for about ten minutes not moving an inch. "Do you want me to do it?"
"No i need to, i'm just freaking out. I have no idea what this is and once i open it, i can't go back."
"That might be a good thing though. Sometimes we need to move forward and we can not do that if we don't take the steps to make it happen."
He give me a slight smile and opens the folder. His expression doesn't change for a few minutes until his jaw hits the floor. "Oh my god!"
"What, what is it?" I couldn't understand the look on his face. Anger, sadness, and understanding maybe? He said nothing so i moved closer to him for a better look.
"This is why my parents died, money!" We look at each other and i rip the folder form his hands. This was sick, oh so sick.
"Is this... a life insurance policy?" That fact that all of these peices are being put together is starting to freak me out. His parents were killed for money, this was just awful."Yeah, they were. Five million dollars is more than enough for a motive to kill someone."
I started flipping through more papers and what i saw next made my blood run cold. "Spike, there is another policy. This one is for one million and there is also an inheritance, it's for three million." He takes the papers and i noticed that he was as white as a sheet. This was worse than we thought. Was somone going to come back and kill Spike too?
"It says here that my uncle is the main benificary for all of the accounts if we all die. I am still living so i am supposed to get all of this. If i die he gets everything, it has to be him. No one else has this kind of motive." He sits there for a minute with his head hanging low and tears well up in his eye. "My fathers own brother..... for money! This is bullshit!" He suddenly stands up and starts throwing everything he could find. I quickly grab the papers, it was our proof and we did not need that damaged. He picks up a chair and it crashes across the room. I smartly make my way outside to wait for his explosion of anger to end, he wasn't in his right mind right now.
Ten minutes later he was still going at it and i was afraid the place was going to colapse in on it's self from the damage that my boyfriend was giving it. A few minutes later he had stopped and i could hear him crying but for the life of me i didn't go in because i am sure he didn't want me to see him in such a state, but i completely understand so i wasn't judging here, ya know. Out of the corner of my eye i saw a light and i swung around to figure out who the intruder was because i wasn't sure how he was going to react to another person other than myself around him right now. Who the hell would be in the woods? Oh my god... was it the killer, holy shit! As i open my mouth, getting ready to scream for Spike i saw a cap of hair and my very own mother running towards me.
"Avery, what the hell are you doing out here?"
Here goes nothing. "We found out that Spike's parents were killed for money and we think we know who did it and he is flipping out so i'm standing out here giving him some space."
She takes her hand and runs it through her hair while she tries to slow her breathing due to her running. "I heard screaming, i had no idea...wait what were you guys doing out here anyway? Ave answer me." I said nothing. Giving away his location reguardless of being caught was not happening, my lips were sealed. She looks around behind me and goes to the door just as he comes outside. He looks over to me and i throw up my hands and said that she heard the comotion, i didn't call and he lowers his head.
My mother walks up to him and wraps her arms around him and just holds him. After a few seconds he returns her embrace and then she just had to open her mouth. "Spike, is this were you live sweetie?" He said nothing at first but after a second he gave her a short nod and scratched the back of his head. She takes his hand and pulls him inside. "Ave we will be out in a second, okay."
About five minutes later they come out and they had a few bags with them and boy was i curious. "What is going on?" He looked at me and had a nervous smile on his face.
"Spike is going to live with us, no more of this shit here." I had a huge smile on my face and before i knew what was going on i had ran at him and jumped on him." Yes, this is awsome! Can he stay with me mom, please!"
"Let me think about it, okay?"
"Sure thing mom." I was not going to bug her about this, it was just too important, even though she will probably say no. We started the walk back and i was glad that i still had those papers, tomorrow was going to be busy as hell. I knew that my mom was going to let him stay. She loved him just as much as i did. I'll just take his stuff to my room. Yeah, that should work just fine. Not!
