The first thing I realize when I start coming to, is the hand holding mine.  It was cold so I assumed it was Bucky's.  My mind flashes back to all the times we've done this.  It's hard to fight back the memories that threaten to suffocate me but I'll do it for him.  Bucky won't leave my side until he knows that I'm okay.  He probably blames himself for what happened but honestly this time I had it coming to me.  My brother was following his orders and because they can't control me, I didn't follow mine.  My eyes open and I turn my head to see Bucky.  He was passed out in the chair next to me.

He looked almost peaceful.  My heart aches knowing that I wasn't successful in blocking the horrible things he's done from himself.  But then again, he could have torn down the walls.  If he hadn't disappeared, I might have been able to keep them up but we were separated for so long and frankly my powers are only so powerful.

"He hasn't left your side."  My head turns to see Captain America standing there watching both of us.  I flash through all of Bucky's memories of the man.  The walls I built showed me everything that Bucky remembered and the ones of him and Steve were the freshest.  Even HYDRA couldn't completely erase them.  "You must mean a lot to him."  I could feel the guilt taking hold of me because I shouldn't mean this much to Bucky.

"He feels guilty." I reply as I try to sit up.  My side screams in protest so I decide that I'll stay where I am.  I fight the urge to cry as the pain slowly dies down again.  If I ever get ahold of my brother again, I will personally inflict ten times this much pain on him.  "I wish I could tell him everything."   I finally admit as I notice that Captain is waiting for me to speak again.

"You could tell him the truth Serenity."  Captain takes a seat on my bed.  I study Bucky making sure he wasn't waking up but sure enough my assassin started to slowly come to.  "He deserves to know."  Captain urges me but it wasn't that simple.

"Deserves to know what?"  Bucky asks as he stretches.  I wasn't going to tell him everything, not right now at least.

"Nothing." I lie as I offer Bucky a small smile.  He returns the favor and gently squeezes my hand. "So what happens to me now?" I ask Captain knowing he's the one in charge of my fate at this moment.  Bucky could advocate for me but he could only do so much.

"We extended you protection here at the compound.  You'll have to prove to us that you're not a threat but other than that you're safe here."  I nod thankful Captain was so understanding.

"I promise I won't let you down."  I glance over at Bucky who offers me an encouraging smile.

Captain's POV:

"Are you sure about her?" I ask my friend as we sit around the main conference table.  Almost all of the avengers were present except for Spidey and Thor.  The assassins seemed to have come to a consensus that Serenity needed to be protected.  Nat even offered to talk to SHIELD if we weren't willing to keep her here.

"She was born into HYDRA and she was as much a prisoner as I was.  Serenity helped me on multiple occasions.  She also holds the key to my memories."  Bucky explains as I watch his metal hand flex.  The arm was a peace offering from Stark after he learned to deal with the fact that Bucky killed his parents.

There was more going on here but it seems that Bucky, Nat and Clint don't want to share the information with the rest of the group.  Nat would keep Serenity in line if anything happened but I'm worried what will happen to the Avengers if the government finds out we're protecting a dangerous mutant.

"She's also a danger to the team."  Tony interjects voicing my concerns aloud..  "Have you seen the file SHIELD has on her?"  Tony must have hacked into Serenity's file.  I would have to ask him to show me everything they have on the girl.

"She's a child, Tony. She did what she had to to survive."  Wanda argues.  "You protected me." The statement seemed to cut into Tony's resolve.

"HYDRA wants her dead."  I add trying to keep the peace.  "If she's open about what she's done, then we have to find it in ourselves to give her a chance."  But I will keep her on a short leash for Bucky's sake.

Natasha brought Serenity in.  She looked like a little girl now that she was dressed her age.  At only thirteen, she's already had a crappy life.  Nat got her a few dresses and they pulled her hair back so she looked almost innocent but the haunting look in her eyes told all.  Nat puts a reassuring hand on the girl's shoulder as everyone studies her.

"You look different."  Bucky tells her and she nods as she tries to find her voice.

"I know there's a lot for the Avengers to consider when taking me in especially since I worked for HYDRA.....But I promise that I want to make up for everything that I've done.  I've killed people both under HYDRA's spell and the few months I managed to free myself.  I won't lie about that but please understand that HYDRA doesn't let people leave.  Some of you protected Bucky even after he did some pretty bad things.  I'm just asking for a chance."

"I vote yes."  Wanda tells everyone.  "We all deserve a second chance."  The girls exchange a small smile.  If anyone deserved a second chance it was Wanda.

"I'm with Wanda."  Nat smiles at Serenity.  "Everyone needs a chance to make everything better."

"I vote no."  Rhodey doesn't seem to be swayed by her appearance.  "She killed Americans."  I wanted to argue that a lot of us have killed Americans but I wasn't about to start that discussion.  However, it hurt me to see Serenity flinch as she fought back tears.

"Usually I would be with Rhodey," Tony glanced at Wanda and then back at Serenity, "however, I did stand up for Wanda.  People change."  Vision and Rhodey were the only ones who voted no.  Everyone else was for taking in Serenity.
