Alex POV
As the journey continues I keep getting this feeling that I want it to be over. We have been walking for weeks, months even. I didnt think it would take us this long to get to the resistance.
These past few weeks it has been like I'm doubting the resistance even exists. Only thing that keeps me going are three promises.
1. Get to the resistance, slice to.
2. Keep Rumi safe
3. Fight the things that threaten survival of one and two.
So I keep walking. My shoulders sag with every step and my legs burn with the tearing and rebuilding of muscles. The temperature is at least ninety two degrees and the sun seems to want me dead. Some piece of dread in me just keeps saying that there is no need to go on. I can die peacfully here. If I die here I won't be proud.
We keep walking and I'm surpried Rumi isn't complaining because right now I am cobtemplating letting out a strangled sob of surrender. Each step just hurts so bad. I turn around and see that Rumi is hooked arms with Sean. She is slightly slouched over and drousy. She sludges and she just drags her feet, I can tell she is barely keeping it together, just like me.
Sean doesn't look much better, he looks tired and that every second supporting Rumi takes twenty percent of his energy. The sweat pours off of his neck and head and he looks like he can't take any more, period. Camen is the peppiest of us all, he has a jump to his step and he hums a little tune that makes me angry and jealous.
"Camen, SHUT UP!" I say through clenched teeth. I'm suddenly irritable and I just want to punch him. I think there is more anger behind it than just his happiness.
"No, I dont want to shut up." he retorts and continues to hum
"You're so annoying!" I shout and lunge at him.
I slam him against the nearest car and put my forearm against his windpipe. The sudden burst of energy causes me to hurt even more but I don't care because I'm aurging with adrenaline. I push him tighter and he coughs, gagging in pain.
"Alex, come on let him go its just the heat getting at you." Seans says and I turn around to look at him.
"No, he hasn't said a word to me for days! He acts like he loves me and then boom he hates me and doesnt talk to me at all. It makes me angry, so maybe I should hate him." I say turning back to Camen. His beautiful eyes are sad and broken.
He opens his mouth to speak and says "Alex I didnt know you were that attatched. I am sorry."
"No you aren't dont lie to me." I spit, letting him go and continuing walking. We walk for another thirty minutes. Suddenly Rumi gasps my name, causing me to look up.
There infront of me about a mile away is a large bustling city. It isn't run down and out of everything, it looks happy and enlightened. I get excited and I start to run.
I sprint towards it and just keep running until soon enough I am there in front of the chain link fence that guards the city. I just want to fall onto my knees with thankfulness. This great place rising in front of me is what I heald on to for hope the whole journey lately.
A man in a guard uniform comes up to me and looks at me with harsh eyes. He looks me up and down and then grunts. He slowly opens the gate and lets us in. We all surge in and Rumi collapses with relief and maybe heat exhaustion.
The guard helps sean gather Rumi and he guides us to a large building labeled "City Hall" .
"Here, these people will decide what to do with you." the armed man says shoving us into the building.
"Well thanks for being so polite." Camen snarks in response.
Rumi falls down and swan picks her up with sleepiness, throwing her over his shoulder. We walk into a large room that is like an office. In the large chair a man sits there. He has dark brown, greying hair and a hardened smile.
"Hello, young people, welcome to the resistance." he says with a crisp voice that matches his strict apearance "I am the head overseer here with the resistance. I'm so glad to have you joining here. I will have some guards take you to your acomadations, tomorrow I will have a military official take you on a tour and show you what we are all about. I assume you will need two apartments."
"Thank you very much for your kindness." Camen says with a charming smile "This all is what we have looked forward to for years, I just expected more."
"Sorry son but this is a warning, smart mouth like that can get you killed in a moments time. You need to know that here we are happy to have you and we enjoy new comers, but here I can't control the members behavior, I am not a dictator and I would prefer they do what they like, in an orderly manner." The overseer says with a worried frown. I guess he has seen many people like Camen
A few guards walk in then they bring us to a long row of buildings, each one looks identical. Two guards split off and bring Camen and Sean to building 78 then the other two escort Rumi and I to building 90. We aren't too far away from the boys but I'd rather be closer.
"Ma'am," one of the guards says tapping my shoulder "we ration eight gallons of water a month so I suggest you watch it on the water, but we give each new comer an extra two gallons because there is nothing like the first clean bath. Well, and the fact they all need it."
Something about the wrinkling of his nose makes me offended and I tug at my clothes, pulling them tighter to my skinny body.
"There are two pairs of clothes in the dresser. They are generic. You can buy new clothes with your pay each month, whixh you will learn about tomorrow with Eden. I hope you enjoy your night." the guard finishes, closing the door.
I hook the chain so that the door is secure and locked. I go past the short entry hallway and come into a kitchen, living room area. Rumi is sitting on a wooden chair happily putting her friends in front of the warm fire. I walk into the door right of the fire place. in it is a small room with two skinny beds with quilts and a chest at the end of each.
I walk out and to the door left of the fire place, there Is a bathroom with a large barrel tub, a running toilet, and a working sink pump. I go back out and geab my set of clothes from the chest at the end of the bed closest to the door.
I go into the bathroom and run hot water into a tub. I strip and slip into the water. It burns my skin at first but my skin gets used to it. I grab a scrub brush and eub it hard against my skin. My skin turns raw and red with irritation from the rough bristles. I scrub on some soap and then dip my hair into the now soapy water.
I stay in the tub for a while until my skin wrinkles like a drying plum. I put on the brown shirt and dark green jeans. I shake my hair down and walk back out. Rumi is sitting in the kitchen eating a thick piece of raw meat.
"Rumi!" I scold "We have a fire you can cook that on."
I reach over and yank the piece of meat from her grasp and put ir on a rack over the fire as it cooks she goes to take a bath, then when she gets out she finishes her meat and we lay down for a great, peaceful sleep.
