Chapter 19

ALEX POV (sorry this might be a bit shorter than usual)

Camen leans over me and looks at the reopened gash on my leg. I had just been able to start walking again too! I sigh as he touches it with a scapula. He pushes around and I cry out in pain. He mutters an inanimate "sorry" and continues looking around mg leg.  Finally I cant take it anymore.

"Gah!!! Do you have to do that? It hurts bad!" I shout reaching to grab my leg. Just as I bend I feel a tear in my abdomen.

I panically look down and see that I've reopened my abdomen wound too. Each thing I do just adds to mh time in bed. Mg time laying down when I could be out hunting or trading to provide. I hate being thr weakest link, the thing that slows everyone down.

"Why can't you trust me?" He asks me, squinting his eyes to slits

"Because, I don't know, you dig around in my leg like a freaky mad guy!" I say exhasperated

'Oh, I was just swarching for anything to cause infection." He says as if I'm stupid. "I'm gonna clean it out so you don't get infected."

"I hate this!" I shout at him knowing all he is doing is to help me

"I know, baby girl but I want you to stay okay and alive!" He says with a smirk

He pulls out a little container of the blue salve. At the thought of it I wince.

"I'm sorry, I know it hurts." He says starting to rub in the  salve "Someone as tough and bad as you I'd excpect to be able to with stand some measly salve." He chuckles. A wave of anger makes me stare at him with disbelief but it is gone as soon as he flashes me those gorgeous teeth.

"Whatever." I say, upset at the attack to my reputation

"You act like a man who's mancard fell out at the mall." He laughs wrapping up my leg and starting on my abdomen.

Once he is done he injects me with a sleepy needle to make me drowsy and to let me drift off. When I wake up I hear a loud banging in the living room. I slip onto the ground and crawl out.

The first thing I see is Rumi. She is panting with her hands on her knees and twigs in her hair. She sees me too and her jaw drops.

"Alexis! You need to be in bed." She says sternly.

"Well I heard lots of noise so....." I trail off

"Let me help you up." She sighs

Rumi comes over and helps me onto my feet. She crutches me as we walk to the couch. When she sits me down on the old lumpy surface I can't help but let out a sigh. It hurts to walk, no matter how much I want it to change.

"Oh Alex, you're too eager." she says, patting my head knowing  it  will make me feel like a child.

"Shut your mouth. What did you come running in here all frantic for?" I ask her

"Well for one, I was around out there in the woods alone for two hours! Sean left me,  because I - Well that doesn't matter. So I found this place called the Black Market." She takes a long pause

"Rumi! Spit it out!" I shout impatiently.

"There were some people who told of the union forming." She says

I gaspbin surprise "We need to go check it out. Get Camen. Where is Camen? Camen!" I say in a rush

"I'm right here he says and I see he is standing behind me

"Oh. Well can you go to the black market and find out more about it?" I plead

"Sure," He says running his fingers through his shaggy curls "I'm almost out of Acnophrubic powder."

"What?" I ask

"Its nothing," he dismisses quickly

"Well thanks for going!" I say with a smile

"Ill go in the morning since it is getting dark," He says and Rumi cuts him off

"Bad things happen in the dark." She says with a chuckle so unlike herself

"Rumi, whag was that?" I ask. She shakes her head as if ridding it of a fog

"What was what?"

I turn my head with a sudden headache. What was that Rumi just did?  I close my eyes for a moment and it is as if all the noises fade into the background. When I reopen my eyes Rumi and Camen aren't there anymore. The window across from me shows a bright sunshine which floods light into the room.

I painfully push myself up and look around. Rumi is over in the kitchen area, preparing something. I lick my chapped lips and yell at her "Rumi! Where did Camen go?"

She turns her head and says "Oh you're awake. Camen went out to the black market over three hours ago, should be back soon."

"How long was I sleeping?" I ask rubbing my sleepy eyes.

"Oh ten hours, maybe nine." She says shrugging

"Aww I was out a long time." I say sadly

"You didn't miss anything. Camen says you can try to walk again." She says giving me permission to have freedom of walking.

I immediately get up, careful not to put too much weight on my sore leg. I walk around and get rid of thebnumb feeling in my legs. Once I have gotten past the pins and needles stage I walk to the kitchen. Just as I step foot into the kitchen Camen opens the door and steps into the house.

"Hey Cam!" Rumi yells "What did you find out?"

"You wouldn't believe it if I tolf you." he says coming into the kitchen

"Tell us!" I say excited

"A union is forming a new government. Starting in Philidelphia." he says

"No way!" I shout "Is that all you learned?" I ask

"Yes, only so much a guy can do." He sighs "But I did get my Acnophrubic powder, and even some other things." He says holding up a pineapple

"As soon as I am on my feet fully Rumi and I are getting out of here. We are going to Phili." I say as a fact.

"I want to come too!" Camen whines

"Sure, you can come." I say, laughingv at his helpless face.

Three days pass and finally I am able to go to phili. We leave esrly in the morning, even before the sun comes up. I have my hair freshly cut and my bag strapped across my back.  In it are three knives and a few snacky things for Rumi.

Wr start out walking towards phili knowing it will take over two weeks. My leg aches but I focus my mind on everything but my leg. I even dig my nails into palms, so that I'm causing more pain there so it doesn't take my focus.

I keep walking, since Sean isn't here I have to lead the way with my horrible directions. I just have to keep walking, hoping I get to some accord soon.
