ALEX POV!!!!!!

Yesterday, when Rumi told us about the war starting it seemed everyone became tense.  Sean dropped his job and joined the military with us, just like the rest of the men were commanded to do. So, today I made myself a promise to train Rumi. She needs as much self defense as she can get, or I can go ahead and plan her funeral and get her to help me design her gravestone. In other words, It will be the end of Rumi.

Swiftly, I get out of bed and put on my clothes. Going into the bedroom again I grab Rumi, waking her. She looks at me with startled eyes. After blinking a few times her small smile turns into a deep frown as she realizes how bad reality is again.

"I don't want to get up, this whole war is my fault." She says curling up tighter into a small ball. I am still angry with her that she didn't even tell me that she was hiding something from me! I will get over it sooner than later so it will be fine, today is a new day.

"I'm training you today for when we get called to war. I wouldn't have to if you hadn't signed up for this and gotten into a military contract." I say with a scowl and pull her out of bed.

"I don't need training!" She attempts to protest trying to crawl back to bed. With a huff of anger I grab a chunk of her hair and wrench her back, kicking her softly. She cries out and I smirk. I'm a cruel friend.

"If you didn't need training you'd have fought back!" I point out  to her with my smirk

"That hurt Alexis!" She complains putting her hand to the back of her head where I grabbed her hair.

"Tough love, we are training." I respond with a growl that slips out.

"Are we going to the base for that?" She asks and it occurs to me the base is a bad idea right now. It will be crowded with soldiers getting placed and packing in last minute training. I am confident enough in my aim that I don't need more training.

"No," I pause and she starts to smile, presumably thinking that we aren't going to practice anymore "we will go out in the back."

"NO!" She says "I'm not going to go get training."

She plants her feet hard on the ground like gluing them so I can't move her. Instead of being immature and trying to pull her I let her stand there.

"Rumi, if you won't go train with me then will you come to the market to get your gravestone carved with me, I'd like to know what you want before it happens because without training you are dead in the water, child. I won't be there all the time to help you and protect you. You need to protect yourself sometimes." I say making her jolt with fear

"Sean will protect me," She says and I interrupt her

"Sean has to protect himself." I spit "As does everyone else and I will sacrifice for you because we are like sisters but love only goes so far, Rumi. I don't think Sean will die for you because you refused to learn how to live. I sure won't."

Turning my back, I stomp away from her and go to the kitchen. I hear some fumbling around and then I reach into the drawers and grab all of the knives we have.

"I'll train." I hear Rumi give up.

I go back to getting my knives, we'll need them all. I pile them on the ground behind the house, facing the trees. I go back inside, searching for something to mark with. I find a vial of dark liquid that stains my fingers. The label on it reads "Ink". Now outside with the vial I use it to draw a target on the largest tree I can find. I sigh, releasing all of the tension and tightness from my body. My muscles move and the knife goes in a perfect spin spiraling over itself. It hits the tree a little off from the middle. It's not good enough. Rumi comes out and I hand her a knife.

"You have two good hands, which means you can throw a knife, or anything for that matter." I say  pointing to the tree with the target.. "That is your enemy, now kill it by hitting the center ring.

Rumi shudders and wraps her fingers around the handle She leans forward and throws the knife. The blade bounces off of the tree and falls to the ground. I groan and walk to the tree to retrieve the knife. Looking back to Rumi I see her cheeks are flushed with embarrassment I stand beside her and spread my feet apart. Pulling back my arm and angling the knife I throw it. The knife embeds itself in the center circle.

Turning to Rumi I hand her a new knife and watch her mimic my pose. She angles the knife just as I did and launches. The weapon leaves her fingers and sails through the air, sticking. She cries out with joy and I see the knife isn't far from the Bull's Eye.

"Rumi!" I scream with joy. There is hope for her. If she can throw a knife she can throw two knives and if she can do that she can kill and not be killed. "Twist your hips more and keep throwing.!"

The more she throws the more I know she may be okay. Of course when I can, I will protect her, I'm sure Sean and Evan will too. What I said earlier was to get her out of bed, and it was a lie. Finally I tell her to stop and her shoulders sag with relief.

"Rumi, now it's hand to hand combat." I say loosening my limbs so I can help her.

She lets out a soft whimper and drops the knife in her hand "Okay." she murmurs. Walking over to me and I begin to coach her.

"Bend you knees, it will give you more leverage. Then you should use your fists since you're tallish for a girl. Let's practice, don't worry about hurting me. Don't worry about getting hurt either." I say squaring up

Rumi starts with knees bent like I told her and puts her arms in front of her torso to protect herself. I make the first move by going to 'kick' her hip. She responds by punching out her fist and hits y jaw.  I yell for her to put more power behind her punches. She tightens her fists and goes to punch my abdomen. This time it's a better contact and actually hurts a little. I yell out more advice and we continue like this. With every punch she gets stronger and more confident.

Behind me I hear quick shuffling and then someone is pulling me away from Rumi. I get out of their grip quickly and turn around. Of course no one but Sean stands behind me with eyes full of anger.

"What are you doing? You ponytailed Dimwit!" I yell at him

"You and Rumi were fighting " he responds putting emphasis on the word fighting.

"Sure, we were training!" I yell at him with so much anger

"Oh," he says, his cheeks turning bright red

"You're an idiot." I say the truth plainly.

"Well I want to spar with her." Sean says looking to Rumi with a grin

"Whatever," I respond siting in the grass and weeds "go ahead."

Sean steps up and prepares to spar his girlfriend. He makes the first move by punching her hip. She cries out and I yell for Sean to be easier with her. He shrugs and the fight goes on. Rumi is on the ground now and she kicks her leg out, taking him to his knees. He grunts and I laugh at his loss of masculinity points. He leans over and pushes Rumi down onto the ground. In one decicive movement he props himself over her, kissing her lightly. My gagging reflexes kick in and I turn around.

"I'm out!" I yell to them getting up and going back around and into the house.

When I am in I sit down and curl up in front of the fire, grabbing a blanket to put around my neck. I sleep next to the fire.
