Sam's POV
So another day almost passed. The wind is getting cooler by each breath, giving me a slight warning of the upcoming cold night. The weather is more obscure lately, being hot and thick one moment and another- freezing cold. This is the middle of summer, the last week of July, but the weather seem more of a late November. It's like a whole world went nuts along with the disappearance of Chad.
I had to slip into my Autumn's eiderdown jacket in order not to freeze to death. A pair of military boots seem to be a weird idea in July, but considering past few nights outside, i'm not gonna risk it.
"This is stupid!"-Paul nods, warily watching at me and slipping into his Christmas themed sweater. "Name the last time you needed warm clothes during summer in Illinois. Seriously. If I knew we're off for hunting marathon at night, i'd buy something more comfortable than this."
"This is stupid, but feels like Christmas anyway. Thanks to you!"-i wink and zip up my jacket.
"Go on, laugh!"-he grunts while picking up his gun and checking the clip. "But when the winter comes, I swear, i'm gonna put this sweater on again even if you all laugh to death and would go get a Christmas tree. Finally."
"We don't celebrate Christmas."
"Yeah yeah, because our missing genius doesn't believe in such crap. Heard it all before."
"If we find him,"-i point a finger at my companion,-"this year i'll throw you a damn Christmas party you'll never forget!"-i open the door leading to the outside, and a goose of frosty wind rushes inside, throwing few fallen leaves inside. "But now i'm out. Take care of the fireplace, would you?"
"Darren's there already. He left an hour ago. But where the hell are you going now? I thought we're patrolling together."
"Nah..."-i wave my palm,-"I'll try different rails tonight. Besides, it's faster when we split. We can search wider area."
"Now you sound as if there's zombie apocalypse outside. Take the gun!"
"Sometimes it feels like it. You too- take the gun!"-i smile as I swing the shotgun over my shoulder and step out of the door.
"Beware of the wolves!"-Paul yells past me, "Don't let them get a chunk out of ya!"
"No worries. If we're lucky tonight, we're gonna enjoy a brand new, furry carpet in our meeting room!"
*****
I cut the path towards the woods through the field. The mist starts to rise already, making my vision blurry. It's weird considering the fact the weather was warm and humid just an hour ago.
Anyhow, ignoring my shaking fingers and numbness in my already freezing feet, like every day i keep dragging myself through the wet paths towards the woods.
I walk miles and miles, but nothing seem to give a hint on Chad's whereabouts.
The shotgun probably must weigh hundred pounds and I have to change the shoulder once in a while. However, after we saw so many wolves lately, i'm not staying unarmed any longer.
I don't know where i'm actually going these few past hours, but trying to never loose the faith to find Haynes kinda keeps me moving further. Call me crazy, but I miss this son of a bitch.
I circle every tree, every fallen shack hoping not to stumble on dead body of my friend.
And I turn around once in a while, only not to loose the sight of the smoke.
Our campground, that is more of a burning fireplace and few stumps around, is left few miles away. We leave it burning just in case Haynes is lost, so he can see a smoke or the light at night. These woods seem to never end, it's secluded, so our warehouse is off the radars. It's funny how hiding from the outer world we don't even consider the fact that one of us could actually get lost in this sea of trees.
