Serene's POV

I had no idea what was going on. How come the duke was so desperate to have this meeting everyone was talking about? What was special about it and what was about to happen?

I felt it in my guts that something wasn't right. However, even the thought itself was disturbing, my body was trembling for the other reason.

He was here.

So close his voice whispered beyond the door, so calming, but in the same time it was so insistent, as if I would step through the door frame any moment and let him finally murder me.

I wasn't sure how was it possible for him to make me crack this much and welcome my own death with such easiness?

However, I never wanted to die, but I knew, one way or the other, i'll see him very soon and I will be punished for running away.

Was the duke noble enough to keep his promise and let not anyone to hurt me?

He came and he threatened me. He said he came to kill me.

I was wondering for quite a while now, how much of a terrible dead awaits me.

These disturbing thoughts started the second Chad left and some guard rushed inside my room with a loud bang and grabbed me roughly by the hand and forced me to step out of the door of my chamber.

Right before the guard closed the door, I tried to peek through, but I saw no one through the gap of a door, it's like everyone was hiding from God knows what.

"Where are you taking me? What's with the rush?"-i whisper yelled, as his sharp nails dug into my flesh,-"let me go!"

"Shut up, human! No move!"-he hissed at me, and his footsteps became even faster, as he dragged me after into the centre of a room,-"sit quiet until the Duke comes up and tells you else wise."

"No!"-i snapped and somehow managed to pull my arm out of his grip, making the guard stumble back because of my sudden act,-"i'm not going anywhere until you tell me what is happening!"

"You don't get it, do you?"-the guard smiled and his grip on me tightened, but right before I was about to protest, he hissed again, forcing me to hold a breath in,-"don't worry. I'm sure you'll figure out everything. Sooner or later."

Saying nothing else, the guard pushed me out of his way and looked worried, more or less, although he tried to remain solid and sharp in front of me, I saw it in his yellow eyes.

For a moment he stood quiet and his sharp eyes squinted, as he hurriedly gazed at the room.

"What are you looking for?"-i whispered and also turned around to quickly observe my room. "No one's here!" Everything was the way I left it in the morning. "Answer me! What is it?"

"Shut up!"-he roared and rushed towards the window, that was wide open. He slammed the frames heavily and locked the window. "Make sure it stays this way. Understood?"

Now I was curious. "Why? It's not like i'm about to jump down from this height. If you didn't know- humans can die because of the fall."

"It's not you i'm worried about,"-he mumbled sadly and only now I caught a glimpse of his fearful, human like soul. He was afraid of someone, obviously. "Now stay quiet. The Duke will come up soon. Behave."

I knew they were waiting for Haynes to finally show up, but home come the Duke was on such overdrive, as if the hell would crash right at his feet if he didn't show up.

On one thing I was sure- something bad, something really huge was about to happen and I would've been lying saying that this curiosity wasn't killing me.

However I questioned him, the guard didn't say another word to me, neither answered what is happening downstairs. He rushed out the door and locked it down, leaving me completely alone. Again.

But I knew. At least I wanted to believe this, that he came for me, that very soon he's taking me away of this place.

I ran back towards the window, trying to see anything through the darkness, but saw nothing.

"Oh Chad!"-i whispered as I crumbled down by the window, exhaustion and nervousness taking it's toll on me. "Did you come for me or for your throne?"

"He did!"-king teased appearing at my doorstep. You have no idea what's going on, do you?"

"Tell me."

"He came for you!"-he said with a smirk. "But in order to have you, he must accept the prophesy. Funny thing is, he's about to die doing so."

King widely smiled and sat on the bed, his velvet hood scattering on the silk sheets.

I watched his ironic grin and noticed, how satisfied he felt with himself. That could mean just one thing. "You're about to betray him, aren't you?"

"He's naive. Such authority would be too much for him. You see, Mr.Haynes isn't familiar with the underworld. He has no experience in leading the armies of demons and more than that- he has no will to be the ruler of his kingdom. I, on the other hand, was doing this for centuries. I'm the best at it. Besides..."-he sighed as he stood from the bed and kneeled next to me. "Pretty flower, do you really think he will trade you for his freedom?"

"He would, I know it. I...I believe it."

"Guess again. He has someone else fulfilling his desires at the moment."

"You're lying!"-i shook my head, for a strange and both absurd sense of betrayal and jealousy shot through my guts. "Not that i'm this close."

"And again- you're naive. He's the devil. Do you really think he would trade a weak human soul as yourself for the demon, who's best at it?"

Trying to ignore painful thumping of my heart, I wiped my teary cheeks with a sleeve and pulled my eyes at the man in front. "Tell me, duke. How are you going to destroy him?"

"Luckily for you,"-he smiled again,-" i'm in a good mood now, so make yourself comfortable and listen, pretty flower. We, demons, don't like to repeat ourselves."

I was left speechless hearing duke's plan on killing chad. This was obvious, more or less- Chad was doing the right thing refusing everything, what duke insisted.

He never was meant to rule this secret world. He was just a tool to help duke gain his power back.

I hated his guts, but...in the same time I wanted him safe.

This is natural, my pretty flower. You have feelings for this man. No wonder, he's the devil, he was meant to be this-handsome and charming, so you see him as your weakness, want him around. What is exactly that interest you this much?"

"Please, don't say that! How can you even think like that? I feel nothing except hate. He is torturing me! Hurting me in all those disgusting ways! How could I possibly have some romantic feelings for him."

"Human mind is hard to explain, unfortunately. You seek for danger, it seems. And when you finally drift in it, you dream of peace and quiet. I would never understand it."

"What would happen with me?"

"What would you want to happen?"

"I wanna go home."

"Too bad, pretty flower. You're never going home again. After Mr.Haynes is finally dead, we will attend a court. You see, since the day you appeared in his life, everything went to hell. Only because of you we're experiencing so many problems right now."

"You want to kill me too."

"I didn't decide yet. The council makes the final decision. If all of them, 12 members decides you must die, I would have to respect their choice and obey."

So this was it. My future was clear. I was about to die one way or the other. I hardly swallowed and breathed out. "When i'm getting to see him?"

"Tomorrow morning. Be ready by 12, it's when we're having a dinner. Pick something sweet. It's the last time you see each other."
