Chapter 27

"Now you two be good, and win that competition. Sophie, can you please go get me a bottle of water from the vending machine out there?" Dad asked.

Dad woke up and he was acting as if nothing happened. Of course we were all thrilled that's he's okay, including Adam, who my dad really likes and approves of.

"Sure, daddy." I said and kissed him on the cheek before walking out of the room and winking at Adam.

I grabbed the water bottle then when I was about to open the door, I heard my dad's voice.

Probably talking to Adam.

Is it okay if I eavesdrop for just a second?

"I know you know about her ex-boyfriend who broke her heart and played her. I'm an old man, Adam. I don't like seeing my little girl get heartbroken. You seem different. You make her happy in a way that seems strange. But it makes her happy. Therefore it makes me happy. I want the best for my little girl, and I hope you can be good to her and not break her heart." Dad said and I held the water tight to my chest.

I'm nervous about Adam's reply.

He's probably going to freak out and tell him it was all a mistake and that I'm too weird.

"Sir, I would never ever ever hurt, Sophie. I would rather take my own life away than ever hurt her in anyway. You know when you feel like what the hell do you have to live for? And life is so dark, you barley see a future for yourself. I wasn't my best for a while, I was going mad, because I couldn't get what I wanted. I watched Sophie for more than eight years and I wanted her so bad that I did things that would hurt me. I didn't see a future for myself, it was all so pointless. But when I finally got my chance, I realized that she deserves so much better but I'm very selfish. I can't let her go. But everyday, I wake up, I force myself to do better and be better for her. Everyday, sir. Without even realizing, Sophie has become everything I needed and wanted. She's become my purpose in my life, my reason to be something, my reason to be a good man. She's become the future I want. Sir, I can't let her go, because of one simple reason. I love Sophie." He said and my breath caught in my throat.

Adam loves me? Maybe he's saying that to make my dad happy but all the things he said before it.

Were they true? And if there are, oh my god, I'm like the worst girlfriend on the planet.

I knocked and opened the door with a smile on my face as if nothing has happened.

"I hope Adam was being decent to you, daddy." I said as I poured some water into a cup for him.

"He's a good boy." Dad replied with a smile that made his eyes crinkle.

"It's just an act. He's a demon on the inside." I said and Adam grinned wickedly at me.

"It's a good act then, have you thought about acting in the future, Adam?" Dad asked and Adam chuckled.

"Sure, why not? I've got the looks, the talent and the charisma." He said and I rolled my eyes.

"So full of yourself." I said.

"Ring me when you reach camp." Dad said.

"Are you sure you don't want me to stay longer?" I asked.

"Dear, I'm perfectly sure I'm fine. I'm going home today. Your mother and sisters are with me so no need to worry. You be careful. Adam, take care of her." Dad said.

"I don't need anyone to take care of me." I said and stuck my tongue out at Adam.

"This is exactly why you need someone to take care of you." He said and pointed at my facial expression.

"Bye, daddy. Please be safe." I said and kissed his cheek.

"Bye, Mr. Ferris." Adam waved with a polite smile.

"Bye, young man. Be good to her." Dad said and winked at him.

Adam smiled and took my hand. We walked out of the room and were greeted by my sisters and mom.

"Bye, Am. Bye, Adrianna." I said and hugged my sisters as Adam shook hands with them.

"Bye, mommy. Take care of him." I said and kissed her cheek.

"I will." She nodded then smiled at Adam.

She pulled him in a hug. At first he was surprised but then he relaxed.

"Take good care of yourself and Sophie, Adam." She said and he nodded.

"Come on, Adam." I said and we walked out of the hospital to his car.

"I love your family." Adam said once we sat in the car.

"Apparently they love you, too." I said and put my hands on his cheeks. I turned his face towards mine and kissed him passionately.

"Thank you so much for being with me. I don't know what I would've done without you. You're literally the best boyfriend ever." I said and he kissed me again.

"I know." He said and winked at me. I pushed his face away and he laughed.

"I hate you." I said and he chuckled.

"It's the opposite." He grinned and backed out of the parking lot.

"So we're going to practice a lot those few last days." I said.

"More than a lot. I want to win more than anything, Soph. I'm serious." He said.

"I know. I want it, too. Why though? Why the sudden need of it?" I asked.

"I need to be with you. I need us to be together in college, at all times. I also need to do what I love." He said.

"We're going to win." I said.

"I believe in your optimism." He nodded and flashed me a smile before turning his eyes back on the road.

"We're going to win. I'll do everything I can." He said.

"Me too. We will win." I said and looked at him.

I realized at the moment how much we needed to win. Because as much as Adam needs me, I need him, too.
