She had done it.

She had finally told her daughter in law who she was, as she sat in her small studio apartment over looking the park she had spent so many of her days in, she was terrified.

She feared she would lose them. She had come to Chicago within a few weeks of hearing about the accident, she had been keeping tabs on her boys for a few years at that point. A private investigator had tracked them down and supplied her with their current addresses and their careers.

She was proud, they'd both risen above the adversity she had tossed at them, she was pleased to hear Kyle was married, and was elated when she discovered that they had a child.

She was a grandmother, though it was in name only. She didn't think she'd ever get the chance to know her grandchild.

Rhonda had been happy to keep her distance, knowing her boys were happy was enough for her.

That all changed when she learned of the accident that had killed Bobby, Kyle, and Kristin and left Hazel injured.

It was then she knew she needed to make amends, she needed to see Adam, losing Kyle was heartbreaking and she could no longer stay away.

It had been nerve wracking, she was afraid to approach Adam, he had been a little boy when she left and she hadn't been a mother to him in a long time. Her depression had been life long, it really hit her during her twenties. For awhile she had a handle on it and was doing okay, she met Bobby and life was pretty good.

They got married, had kids and it was good for a little while, it was never perfect but it was nice.

Then the rug was pulled out from underneath her when her parents died.

Adam was just two years old at the time, she had barely acknowledged him and Kyle it added to fuel to the fire. That was her quickly disintegrating marriage.

She was a disaster, she would drink her self into an oblivion and craved darkness and silence. The storm raging in her head was unbearable and inescapable and the last thing she wanted to do was deal with her children. She couldn't deal with them, she couldn't deal with herself.

Bob, bless him had tried to make it work, she didn't make it easy for him.

If she wasn't depressed and crying her eyes out, she was pissed at the world and she made damn sure everyone knew it. Including her two children, she didn't care who she lashed out at and who she hurt. She wanted everyone to feel like she did.

She pulled the tiny Cubs shirt to her face, it was one of the few things she had taken with her when she left. It was originally Kyle's and was passed down to Adam, and it was the only piece of her boys she had the last twenty plus years.

Kim felt as if she'd been on auto-pilot the last few days, her body was present but her mind was elsewhere. Her only saving grace was that Adam was working eighteen hours days and only came home for the occasional nap, and a quick shower.

The kids missed him terribly and Hazel seemed to watch out the window for him for hours on end. She'd squeal with delight when his Tahoe pulled in the driveway, she'd race to the door and fly into his arms as fast as she could.

When he had to return to work she needed to be pried off of him, and Adam hated it. Which caused him to not come home during the day, she could see he was agonizing over it and she did whatever she could to help him.
