Spring was approaching another long and cold Chicago winter was on the way out, and Sam was chomping at the bit for baseball season to start. Adam had promised to take him to the Cubs home opener, she was certain both Adam and Sam were still walking on air after the Cubs World Series win.She could still remember the night they won. Though, that night was bittersweet for Adam, and she had been blindsided by his varying emotions that night.
Adam had run throughout the house screaming like a mad man, he went outside screaming his head off, Sam in his arms screaming just as loud as his daddy. Leaving Kim and Hazel in shock at their behavior, though they quickly learned he wasn't the only madman on the block. It seemed half of the husbands on their block were doing the exact same thing, and it seemed Adam would never go to bed.
Kim had given up on him and went to bed, it was hours later when she woke to find Adam's side of the bed empty. There was a sliver of light coming in beneath their bedroom door, she was a bit surprised that he was still up. She grabbed her robe and slipped it on half expecting to find a very drunk and very passed out Adam, and that was not what she found, not even close to it.
He was sitting on the floor his back against the wall, a small table lamp was on and it was just enough light to illuminate Adam's slumped form.
"Adam, honey..what're you doing..it's late, come to bed." Kim whispered, she reached out to touch his shoulder.
"He loved the Cubs, Kim." Adam finally spoke, his voice was so soft that she had a hard time understanding what he was saying.
"What?" She touched the back of his head, threading her fingers through his uncharacteristically long hair, "Who are you talking about?" It was almost immediate after the words left her lips that she realized what he had meant. "Oh...Adam.." she sat down beside him, and was throughly unprepared for the complete breakdown he had in her arms.
"I miss him.." he sobbed, "I miss my dad and Kyle."
"I know you do..so do I. Everyday Adam" Kim could feel his tears on her neck, he had a handful of her robe clutched in his fist.
"All I ever wanted was a Cubs World Series win..." Adam finally pulled himself out of her arms, he ignored the tears as they streamed down his cheeks, "I was so happy..you know? Me and Sam...my little boy. I was ecstatic..and then I felt this overwhelming sadness...I wanted my dad..and I wanted Kyle. I wanted to bust his balls...and I couldn't. "
Kim's heart broke for him, "Oh, Adam."
She had held him for a long time that late night, they had both shed tears for what had been lost, and they sought comfort in each other's arms. Kim did her damnedest to show Adam how much she loved him, she wanted to love every inch of him and that was exactly what she had done.
"No! It's mine...I touched it first. That means it's mine!" Kim could hear the beginnings of an argument between Hazel and Sam, it was Sam who was doing most of the yelling.
"What's going on guys?" Kim glared at them, the pair fighting over they last chocolate chip cookie.
Sam held large cookie in his hand, "I got it first...Hazel tried to grab it from me!" He explained, "but daddy says whoever touches it..gets it. So, it's mine." He dug his heels in, he wasn't about to lose that cookie.
"You've already eaten two, Sam. You need to share, so give it to me..right mommy?" Hazel argued her case and looked to Kim for validation.
Kim felt like a referee more than she felt like mother, it seemed the kids would fight over anything..."Nope. You both lose" she grabbed the cookie from Sam and took a large bite, "it's my cookie." She finished what was left of it and brushed the crumbs from her hands.
