PRE AUTHOR'S NOTE

This chapter is very violent and some would consider it graphic so please take caution in reading.

Uncle Gene gave into the voices, yet again. They must have been telling him to shoot up his niece and nephews' school. He fired randomly into the crowd of people. Before I even had the chance to run, I was lifted into the air by Tyler and carried at sprinting speed towards the girl's bathroom. He tripped over the lifeless body of one of our classmates and we stumbled to the ground. As I tried to regain my balance, my hair was jerked upwards. Gene had wrapped my hair around his hand and pulled me up to him. He held the tip of his gun to my temple. "Ah, ah, ah. Don't even try it, y/n. If you try to escape I'll kill everyone here, and finish with you." Fear was coursing throughout my body. I remembered glimpses of the previous night's dream, and knew that's what it had to be: my funeral after Gene shot me.

I was so terrified I couldn't even bring myself to cry. My eyes met with Axel and Aaron's. I had no idea they were even in the crowd. They both stood up with their hands up, slowly and calmly. "Uncle Gene," Axel started, "I get it, you aren't thinking clearly, but we can stop this now and no one else has to die."

"Just let y/n go, and let's talk this out." Aaron finished. I was just starting to feel grateful for the classes they were taking at the police academy, when Gene put a bullet in each of their heads. They slumped to the ground, and crimson blood pooled around each of their faces.

"'Talk this out'. What is there to talk out, Aaron?" Gene was talking to the corpse of my older brother. "We have nothing to talk about. This is quite simple. Everything will be over when you are all dead." Gene finished speaking to Aaron and started scanning the area for his next victim. The first person I spotted was Taylor. Unfortunately, she was also the first Gene spotted. "You there! Blonde one, you, y/n's friend, come over here." Taylor slowly stood and made her way over to Gene. She wasn't fast enough for him, so he dragged me over, and grabbed her as well. He holstered the gun and held Taylor's hair. She was much shorter than Gene and I, so she was lifted off the ground. The next person I saw was Tyler, creeping out of the girl's bathroom on all fours. I shot him a look saying "don't, he'll kill you," but he didn't care. He continued along the wall until I couldn't see him anymore. The next thing I knew was being dropped to the ground as Gene fell. Tyler and Josh had managed to sneak up behind him and take him out at the legs. I sat up and saw Josh repeatedly punching Gene's face, knocking him out.

"Josh, that's enough." Tyler put his hand on Josh's shoulder. He continued with punching. Tyler jerked Josh's shoulder so he would face him. "Josh! That's enough. He's out." They both stood up and ran over to Taylor and I, still sitting on the ground, petrified. Tyler scooped me up in his arms and held me like a baby. Josh did the same to Taylor. I couldn't react and all I did was stare up at him, tears were welling in his eyes. He held me as close as he could and rested his chin on top of my head. He started crying and fell to the ground, me still sitting in his lap. I looked around to the people of the crowd who survived. They were all hugging someone, even a complete stranger. "Preps" were hugging "Emos", "Jocks" were hugging "Nerds", it all just proved that tragedy brings out the best in people. Tyler and I stood up and went over to the others to help them up, as Josh was checking if police had come yet. They had and they came inside, knowing that the shooter was, at least for the moment, incapacitated. Medical first responders were taking the wounded and killed. I counted a total of 17 corpses; two of which were my brothers.

Tyler walked me outside with his arm around my shoulder and my head on his shoulder. My parents rushed right up to us immediately, both of them crying. Tyler let go of me and my mom and dad both hugged me tight. "Oh my god. I was so worried when I heard there was a shooting at the school. Where are your brothers?" My mom asked, worry in her voice. I was just looking down at the ground, unable to speak.
