All I could hear when woke up, was a faint "I'm so sorry" every few seconds. When I finally opened my eyes, I saw the bright, fluorescent, rectangular lights of a hospital room. I didn't know how long I had been there, or why. I coughed and tried to sit up.
"Hello?" I weakly called to anyone who might have been in earshot. Tyler bound to my side from a chair next to my bed.
"Y/n! You're awake! Oh thank God you're awake!" Tears were streaming down his face, and I could tell he hadn't slept in a while. "If I just let us stay home and eat Taco Bell this wouldn't have happened, I am so sorry." I heard new footsteps enter the room.
"Boy, I told you she would wake up. You just had to give the little lady some rest." A tall man in a white coat stood beside Tyler and put his hand on his shoulder. "Hell, compared to some of the people I got in here, that mere 3 day rest was just a quick nap. Nice to meet you while you're awake, kid. I'm Doctor McGraw and I've been taking care of you since this young man came in the door with you from the ambulance." He talked slow and smooth.
"How long did you say I've been here for?" I asked, wondering what all I'd missed.
"You've been out cold for three days. He's been here with you the whole time. I tried gettin' him to go home, get some sleep, but he wouldn't leave your side. Good one you've got here." He gestured at Tyler again, and Tyler blushed at the compliment.
"What, uh, what exactly happened? Why am I here, what is all of this.?" I finally comprehended that I was indeed in a hospital. And people only go to the hospital when something is wrong.
"Do you remember any of it?" The doctor asked. I shook my head. "Well, miss, you were on your way to your school's homecoming dance, as Tyler told me, when you tripped right into the road, where a big SUV bumped you right in your head." He lightly hovered his hand over my head. "The spill gave you a concussion, and a broken wrist. You're lucky you made out with just that. But I am curious as to why you stayed out so long. Have you been under a lot of stress lately?" Tyler whispered something into his ear. No doubt about my dead brothers, newly alcoholic mom, or even my workaholic dad. Something of the sort. "Ah, I see. Well, we'll get some vitals from you and see what we can do from there." He started doing normal doctor things, like checking my blood pressure, pulse, oxygen levels, the normal. When he started recording stuff from the monitors hooked to me, Tyler explained each screen.
"See that one? That one checks your oxygen and how many breaths you take in a minute. And that one-" He continued on about things I didn't think he knew anything about.
"Tyler, how do you know about some of these things?" I asked when he finished talking.
"Well, when you sit here with nothing better to do for 3 days, you start asking nurses about what they're doing."
"You should have just gone home, my mom or someone could've stayed here with me, you didn't have to."
"No, I wanted to. My parents were okay with it, and your parents didn't seem to like the hospital very much so I told them I'd stay and they could just go, so they did." Tyler didn't seem to see what was wrong with that situation. They're my parents. They are supposed to stay with me until they know I am okay, and then take me home with them.
"That is quite sweet of you, Tyler." The doctor came back to us and started telling me about what he observed.
"Your vitals are all good, we're lucky you didn't break any ribs, or puncture a lung. That would've been the real trouble. From what I can see here, you should be all set to go tomorrow, if you feel up to it."
"I will feel up to it. Thank you, doctor." With that he left Tyler and I in the room alone. "Tyler, what time is it? And day for that matter."
"It is 9:05 p.m. and it is Monday. Plus side, we both got out of school." I chuckled a bit. Only Tyler could stay so positive in a bad time. We stayed up for a few hours, Tyler telling me everything that happened while I was asleep. At about midnight, we both fell asleep, me in the bed and Tyler in the chair.
We woke up Tuesday morning to a few rough knocks on the door. "Y/n. Your family is here." I heard my mom say from the doorway. "Doctor said you can leave now, so get your crap on and let's go." She threw a bag of clean clothes at me. I had forgotten that I was wearing a dress when I got hit.
I looked to Tyler, "what about the dress, did they have to cut it?" It was standard procedure to cut off a trauma victim's clothing.
He nodded, "yea, they also had to cut your um," he awkwardly gestured to his shoulder and chest area.
Rayna spoke up from behind my parents. "It's called a bra, kid." Tyler blushed.
I shooed everyone but Rayna out of the room for me to change. She helped me get into my normal clothes. With the clunky temporary cast, changing was a rather difficult task. When I was finally done, we met the rest out in the hospital corridor. My mom and dad signed some papers to check me out and we left.
We got home and I invited Tyler in. I tried getting down to my room, but my mom stopped me. "Wait, you planning on telling me what happened?" She seemed suspicious, as if I were the one who hit someone.
"I fell and got hit by a car. It's quite simple." I tried yet again to go downstairs, but my mom grabbed me by the arm. Coincidentally, my bad arm.
As I winced in pain, she questioned me further. "But where were you going? Why didn't you tell us you were going to the damn dance? And the night before your brothers' funeral? Really?" That part I forgot about completely.
"The funeral, what happened? Did you have it without me?" It sounded like I didn't want them to, but I secretly didn't want to go to the funeral. I didn't want to see them "one last time".
"No, thanks to your clutzy ass we postponed it to tomorrow. If you go and get yourself hurt tonight I won't change the date again."
"No, I won't get hurt again. Gee mom, thanks for showing so much concern. It really is nice to know you care about my overall wellbeing." I left her with that snarky comment and pulled Tyler downstairs. I slammed my door and punched it. "That-that bitch!" Tyler grabbed the hand I used to punch the door and calmed me down. I must have hit it harder than I thought because there was a new hole in the door and blood on my knuckles. Tyler sat me down on my bed and grabbed a washcloth and some bandages from my bathroom. I started crying as he wrapped my now bloody hand. "I'm sorry, Tyler. I shouldn't have done that."
He kissed my forehead. "Why are you apologizing to me?"
"Because you keep seeing me so pissed and it's probably not a good look. Especially with the cast on one side and busted knuckles on the other."
"It is a very good look. It makes you look tough." Tyler let out a strange fake growling noise and I couldn't help but laugh.
"Yea, so tough as I sit here crying."
"Hey, hey. Only the strongest people can admit when they are feeling down and cry. It's the weak that keep it bottled in." He wrapped his arm around me with his inspirational words. "Wanna go to my place? No offense to your folks, but you seem much happier there."
"Oh I'm sure your parents won't question why you are home your broken girlfriend." I laughed at my own expense, one of my few talents.
"You aren't broken you just have..." he searched his mind for the right words, "more character."
"If you say so. Let's go." I stood up and went with Tyler to his place.
"As we entered the door, I was attacked by a hug from his mom. "Oh, y/n, I heard what happened, are you alright? Oh my, what happened to your hand? Is that from the accident?" She seemed to be giving me a total physical.
"Yes, Mrs. Joseph, I'm fine. As for my hand, no that isn't from the accident, I got angry at my mom and took it out on my door," I didn't hide anything from her, she was a better mother to me than my own at that time.
"Well if it's okay with your family you can stay here until it calms down." She offered with a smile.
"Thanks, Mrs. Joseph."
