I rolled in bed and gave a stretch and felt my arm brush against my boyfriend's warm body. I felt refreshed like I had slept well.
Uh oh, not a good sign.
I shot up in bed and threw the multicolored duvet off of me.
I had overslept."Stop." Phil mumbled as I went to get out of the bed but I suddenly felt his hand on my arm.
"I'm late taking Megan to school." I said panicking "Why didn't my alarm go off?" Did I just not hear it?
"I turned it off." Phil sleepily mumbled.
"What?!" I said in shock.
"I took her." Phil said shocking me further.
"Really?" I asked slightly in disbelief.
"Yeah, I gave her some cereal, helped get her dressed, and walked her to school." He was now starting to wake up a little more. I sighed and got back into bed. "You seemed so tired." It was true, I had been up late last night just thinking, Phil seemed to understand and he let me have some time.
"I want to apologize for yesterday. I was wrong you know. You're trying. It's just this baby thing and trying to get Megan is just... it's stressful to say the least." I said and turned my head to see his brilliant blue eyes half open.
"I was wrong too. And you were sort of right. I need to spend more time with Megan to help take some of the load off of you. I want to be her dad too and and I hope she eventually loves me even half as much as she loves you." He said.
"Thank you. She's already crazy about you I hope you know. By the way, do I get to meet the girl today?" I asked.
"Holly? Oh yeah! I forgot to tell you last night that she wants to meet up at noon at a restaurant down town." He said. I picked up my phone on the nightstand.
"We have some time, like two hours." I stated.
"Oh no you don't Dan." Phil warned. "You should start getting ready now."
"We could make it there in fifteen minutes so technically I have like a whole hour and probably like twenty minutes before I even have to start getting ready." I said. "That's enough time to like watch tv while on my laptop in the lounge."
"Were not doing this today, you need to be ready within the hour, this is important." He said and I rolled my eyes and groaned, but got out of bed none the less.
"Where's your sense of danger, huh Phillie?" I asked as I went over to the dresser that now contained my clothes as well as Phil's since I let Megan have my room.
"That's not danger, that's just you making us obnoxiously late to everything." He said as he got out of bed as well.
He had a shower as I brushed my teeth and did my hair. Part of me wanted to slip in there with him but that would just ruin all the trouble I had went through with my hair, which actually looked alright today to be honest.
We left early (by Phil's request of course) He seemed excited for me to meet her, but I wasn't. I had thought a lot about it last night and I knew Phil would get angry at me again for what I was going to do, but I just couldn't do this baby thing.
The restaurant was very casual and seemed to have just opened for lunch although no one was there yet. Since Phil and I had arrived so early we sat at a booth table by ourselves and waited.
I ordered a coffee and Phil decided to have a four turkey sandwiches. When they placed the sandwiches in front of us he picked one up and bit into it as I looked at him in disbelief.
"What?" He asked innocently as he chewed.
"Four sandwiches?" I questioned "how are you going to eat four sandwiches? You could probably barely finish a happy meal at McDonald's."
"Oh. No. Only one is for me, the others are for Holly." He said.
"I take it she really likes turkey sandwiches?" I asked.
"It's a craving she has." He answered before biting into his sandwich.
"You sure do know a lot about her." I said with only a hint of jealousy. Phil suddenly fished his phone from his pocket and ignored me as he looked at the screen.
"She's here." He said.
"Where?" I looked around the now filling restaurant.
"Just came in the door." He whispered.
"Oh!" I said seeing a girl with a stomach that far surpassed her. It was like she had a beach ball in her grey long sleeved shirt. Her blond hair hung in looses curls and draped over the scarf around her neck. Her coat wasn't zipped and I wasn't even sure that it could from her belly being so massive. She smiled as soon as she saw us and began to waddle faster towards our booth. Phil stood up and gave her as much of a hug as he could but her insanely pregnant belly kept them apart. I put on a fake smile and stood making me come to about a foot above her, she definitely looked sixteen.
"Dan, this is Holly, Holly this is Dan." Phil introduced us making her put on a huge grin as she looked at me.
"Hello." I tried to sound cheerful. She gave an excited squeal before wrapping me in a hug. I'd never hugged a pregnant lady before, but it was very awkward feeling.
"I got you turkey sandwiches!" Phil told her as we all sat down. They sat together across from me in the booth. He scooted the plates towards her and I'd never seen a person go for food so quickly making me give Phil a look but he just scowled at me and mouthed "very pregnant"
I couldn't help but watch her devour the first sandwich in silence."I'm so glad I finally get to meet you, Dan." She gave me a smile, she too had blue eyes but they weren't like Phil's, no ones eyes could ever be like Phil's. "So have you two talked about names yet?" She asked.
"Uh." I said stepping in before Phil could say anything "Actually, we were thinking, and uh..." they were both now looking at me. "We were thinking you could just keep the baby." I said. Phil's jaw dropped slightly in surprise and she now wore a mix of confusion, panic, and hurt on her face.
"I don't recall talking about this." Phil said and she now looked at him.
"We did... briefly... at some point." I said and then scrambled to try to better the situation "You can keep the money to help raise it."
"It?" She continued to look horrified.
"Him, the baby is a boy, Dan" Phil sharply and was now visibly angry with me.
"Who am I to enforce a gender on a baby, am I right?" I made a very stupid joke to try to lighten up this situation but it actually made things worse and more tense. I'm an idiot.
"This isn't a joke, Dan. I don't know what you're thinking, but you're being just awful right now." Phil scolded me as he gave me an angry glare.
"Look," I sighed and looked at Holly "I knew nothing of this baby, I just found out about it yesterday. Whatever Phil agreed to, I don't agree. There is no way we can have this baby." I told her and her eyes seemed to start to fill with tears.
"I can't keep this baby either, my parents won't let me. I just wanted him to go to a good, caring family that I thought would be you two. I have to finish school, I can't be kicked out of my house, I can't be out on the street with a baby." A stream of tears now poured down her cheeks.
Hey guys! Just a quick question for you. What would you do if you were Holly? Would you want to keep the baby and get kicked out? Would you try to find the baby another family to adopt him on such short notice? Or would you convince Dan to try to take the baby anyway? And what do you think is going to happen next?
