Shortly after Josh left, the doorbell rang again.
I sighed.
Who could it be now?
Hopefully it wasn't Josh again. I even hoped that he hasn't come back with good news. As much as I wanted to be rid of Derek, I didn't want to add Josh to my newly-updated list of problems.
I had had enough drama for a lifetime. And I was quite sure that Evelyn wouldn't suddenly want to turn a new leaf to help a buddy out. Heavy sarcasm on the word 'buddy'.
Actually, as I proceeded to make my towards the door, I was quite sure that it was Josh.
He probably had come running back from Evelyn's house because she refused to accept his offer, although I knew she'd be delighted to see him.
As I opened the door, the last person I expected to see was Derek.
He barged in like he owned the place. Actually, he did own the place. Well, half the place, we'd signed off on a new lease agreement about two months ago.
"Where is he?" Derek demanded to know, "Where have you got that little shit hiding?"
"Derek!" I hissed, "What do you think you're doing?"
He turned to me as his magnificent green eyes flashed red, "I want to know where your new fiancé is."
"Fiancé? You mean Josh?"
Derek slowed and looked devastated, "So you admit it? You mean that after all we had you just went and ran back to him?"
I raised my hands in surrender, "Whoa, I didn't run back to anyone."
"Then why is Josh running around telling everyone that you two are married?"
"Married?" I echoed, "I haven't married anyone, except you of course, but you already knew that."
A relieved smile washed over his tense features, "Wait so you're not marrying him?"
"Nope."
"So why is he telling everyone that you are?" He questioned.
I shrugged shoulders, "No idea, but he'll figure it out soon enough. There's no way Evelyn will allow it to happen."
"That's true."
And then silence. It was the first time in a long time that we'd had a civilized conversation. And now that neither of us were saying anything, it had become awkward.
"Sorry to barge in like I did," Derek apologized.
I forced a smile, "It's okay."
Suddenly Cass' voice was in my head again.
'No body hates anyone that much to pull something this elaborate.'
Another awkward silence.
Was that really true?
I sucked in a breath as I tried build up my confidence, "Derek?"
"Yes?"
"Will you go out on a date with me?"
------------------------------------------------------------
Lunch time. There was the hustle, the bustle, and the usual crowds that formed.
"So he just flat out rejected you?" Cass asked, puzzled.
"Yes," I said tentatively.
"Who rejected who?" Rachel and Jenny asked at the same time as they slid into our lunch bench.
I didn't say anything and thankfully, neither did Cass. She knew as well as I did that even the smallest bit of information passed on to either of the two would quickly spread school- wide. That was definitely something that I didn't want happening.
Evelyn and Trishala showed up, laughing and smiling. They each bumped a sharp edge of their purse right into my hip.
I jumped, "Ow!"
The two strolled by without a care and acted as if they didn't hear me.
"You okay?" Cass asked with concern.
"Fine," I grumbled, rubbing a hand against the sore bone.
"Ignore them, they're just jealous," Rachel informed me.
"Jealous of what?" I asked, scowling as I continued to rub against my hip.
Rachel laughed, "You don't get it do you?"
I stared at her blankly.
She leaned in as if she'd learned some big secret, "Every girl in school is jealous of you! They used to be crazed about Callumn before but now every girl is dying to get Derek's attention. They're jealous of you Kate because it seems as though you're the only one he looks at."
"Not anymore." I muttered.
Derek had made it clear that he had no interest in me. He couldn't be with me 'the way we were supposed to be' . Whatever that meant.
Boys. They were so complicated!
