"My mom's not coming," I told Derek.

"To the wedding?"

"That's what I meant, yeah," I said, annoyed with her complete refusal.

Derek breathed out a short blast of air, "Okay, what does she want me to do?"

"She wants you to beg for her forgiveness," I said as I rolled my eyes at her proposal.

"Done," Derek replied and went to our constricted foyer to put on his shoes.

My eyes widened, "Are you serious? Derek you can't do that. My mother is completely out of line. Don't let her win."

Derek fumbled with his laces and I wondered if he had heard me or not. When he had them all done up he gave me a look. One that said, 'really? That's the best excuse you can come up with?' I suddenly felt stupid for acting like I was five.

"It's not about winning or losing Katie. I care a lot more about your happiness and I know that your parents not coming to the wedding won't make you happy," He flashed me a smile, "So if begging for her forgiveness is what it takes for her to come then I'll do it."

His sweet words made me smile, "You're amazing you know that?"

He grinned, "I like to think so."

I swatted his arm playfully, "Don't get too full of yourself."

"A man's pride always needs a little boost."

I snorted, "Pride? More like ego."

He pulled me close into a tight hug and rocked me gently from side to side. I felt a blush rise in my cheeks and a magical electricity pass through my body. Everything he said and did sent a buzz of warmth inside me.

"I want to make you the happiest girl in the world," He whispered as his chin rested on my head.

I smiled, "I already am the happiest girl in the world."

He pulled away and flashed me with a smile that made my heart melt into liquid. He tugged me in the direction of the door.
"Come on, let's get your parents aboard this wedding train."

The both of us stood in front of my parent's house with our hands entangled. A wave of nervousness pulsed through my veins. Jeez, I was so scared of what they would say.

What if they didn't want to come? Did they hate me because of my decision to marry Derek? Was our relationship damaged? Severed?

Maybe Derek shouldn't have come with me. Seeing his face during this tender situation might anger them even more. Coercing them into coming may be harder than I thought.

Derek squeezed my hand supportively, "It's okay, just knock."

I sucked in a breath and rapped the back of my hand three times on the door. Then I waited. And waited. And waited. Nothing was stirring. Not even a mouse.

Then, "Alright mom, I'll get the door!"

In a heartbeat the oak frame opened and behind it stood my beautiful sister Mia with her bouncing golden curls and all. Her eyes lit up when she saw me.

"Omigod! Kate!" She squealed and wrapped her arms around my petite body. She pulled away just as quickly with a sudden stern look on her otherwise gorgeous face.
"Where have you been? Why didn't you come visit me?" She jabbed a finger right in the center of Derek's chest, "It's because you warped her mind under some kind of spell right?"

I was shocked. Never had my sister behaved so inappropriately in front of a stranger. She was always bouncing from place to place, happy, joyous, loud but most of all, completely and utterly loveable. People who came to our house instantly fell for my younger sister's beauty and her bubbly personality.
My parents were constantly being praised for raising her into what she was.
