Derek moved all his things back to my apartment. It was nice to have him back.
He pulled his last suitcase up the elevator and back to my lobby.
I smiled. I had him back. With my body perched on my tip toes, I kissed his cheek. That was all he'd let me do for now. We were taking things slow.
He'd been staying with Marissa, Noah's mom. As much as I hated knowing that he was living with another woman who wasn't me, I knew he wouldn't do anything remotely close to cheating. He wasn't like that. Not like me.
"I missed you," I said as I pulled away from my arms that wrapped around his neck from the kiss.
He smiled, something that seemed forced, "Me too."
I frowned, "What's wrong?"
He shrugged my hands away, "Nothing."
I went silent. It didn't seem like nothing.
He sighed, a hand ran through his lush locks, "I'm sorry. I'm just- I'm still getting used to having you around again."
I ran my tongue over my teeth as though I had a bad taste in my mouth.
"You haven't forgiven me yet. For cheating."He played with his shirt, uncomfortable, "It's hard. I'm trying to. But I'm having trouble to just forget."
I nodded, saddened by something that I expected, "I understand. But we're taking baby steps, right?"
A smile from him, finally something that wasn't forced, "Right."
I had hope for the future. I just hoped he did too.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Derek and I were a couple. I couldn't stop smiling. This was the best news that I'd had in a long time.
Callumn didn't approve of course. He said Derek was 'a jerk who wasn't good enough for me'. His words not mine.
Derek walked me to calculus class with his hand in mine. Did I say I couldn't stop smiling.
It faded when I heard the most annoying, high pitched voice out there.
"Derek! Dereeek! Yoo-hoo!"
We stopped and turned to see, of course, Evelyn.
She gripped my arm as she caught up to us. She was out of breath. She had run. That was the first time that I'd seen her run anywhere.
"Evelyn?" Derek asked.
She smiled, still breathy, "In the flesh."
"Where are you going to in such a rush?"
Another smile from her once she'd caught her breath, "It's not a question of where but what."
Huh?
"Derek I was just wondering if you'd like to pick me up for that movie we talked about. I'm free Thursday after school. We can go then if you want." She said more as a demand than as a question.
Was she blind? It was clear that I was with Derek. I mean, we were holding hands for God's sake, and I was getting jealous looks from just about every girl in school. Was it possible that Evelyn just hadn't gotten the memo? Or was she just trying to fuck with me?
I think the latter was true.
Derek cast a sidelong glance at me, "Um."
I held up our still-entwined hands as proof of our relationship, "Evelyn we're together now."
She glared at me with her chocolate brown eyes under a set of thick, black eyelash extensions, "I was asking Derek. Not you."
I rolled my eyes at her dramatic-ness.
Derek looked to me and smiled just so perfectly that I blushed.
"She's right Eve. We're together now. So I can't go out with you." He said.
I hadn't heard him confirm our relationship before. And boy was it a great feeling to know that he was a 100 percent as on-board as I was.
She pulled a face, "Really? You're going to choose her over me?"
Derek's brows crinkled in surprise, "Yes she's great. Is that a problem?"
She scoffed and looked away before shooting a look of complete distaste my way, " No. No problem at all."
With that she huffed away with a faltered smile.
