The sitting room of Mr. Lamar's office is exactly the way it was when I first came in here. The same chairs. The same desks. The same 'bad kitty' poster of a blown up tabby in the corner.
Even my attitude about divorce was the same as it was many moons ago when I had scrambled in here, half dressed, and desperate for a lawyer.
A sigh I'd held in since the secretary (aka Ms. Grumpy-pants) told me twenty minutes ago to wait in the sitting room for Lamar, finally came out.
Why was I waiting around for twenty minutes?
Last night I had finally managed to text Derek something in between of the very cliché, 'We need to talk' and the very abrupt sounding, 'We need a divorce'. After I'd spent hours away deciding what to say and finally came up with, 'We need to talk about the divorce' he'd managed a very quick 'yes'. Insert irritated eye roll here.
He knew that we were supposed to meet here twenty minutes ago. Four o'clock to be exact. And now it was four twenty with precisely 30 more seconds until the next minute, but who was counting? Certainly not Derek Carter because he was taking his gay old time.
Lamar stepped out of his office for the third time now and looked at me over his glasses in annoyance whilst tapping his watch.
I shook my head and shot him an apologetic look. He turned quickly and headed back inside, blowing out a breath and adjusting his suit.
Just as he walked away, Derek stumbled into the room and headed straight for Ms. Grumpy-pants and told her his name.
Geez that lady had more frown lines than my great grandfather ever did.
Somehow, her frown deepened as she muttered something about the time and then pointed to me.
I turned my head and pretended to be mesmerized by the 'Bad kitty' poster.
He tapped my shoulder and the familiar jolt of electricity past from his fingertips into my skin.
"Hey, sorry I'm late. There was bad traffic and I couldn't make it in time." He said, the deepness of his voice made my knees weak.
Stop it!
"I wish you'd come earlier," Came my spiteful reply.
He raked his hands through his hair, "I'm sorry okay, traffic was bad today."
"There's no traffic at the apartment." I said as monotonely as I could.
"I didn't stay at the apartment."
My body turned to stare at him, "You didn't stay at the apartment?"
He looked confused, "No because I knew you would be there."
Ouch.
The hurt must've shown on my face because he mumbled an apology to me.
Thankfully Lamar stepped back out of his office and gestured for us to come over to him.
As we approached him he gave Derek a sidelong, hateful stare, "Couldn't keep track of time today Mr. Carter?"
Derek shrunk back from Lamar's strict tone, "Sorry, traffic was bad."
"I'll say," I muttered.
"Geez, get off my case would you?"
I turned to him angrily and raised my voice, "Your case? I'm the one who's been waiting around for your sorry ass to show up!"
"Mrs. Carter, please calm down. This is a law office, not a fighting arena." Lamar said ruefully.
There it was again. Mrs. Carter.
"It's still Ms. Williams," I said between clenched teeth.
"Your married, it's only appropriate to use your husband's surname." Lamar explained, as if I didn't already know.
"Not for long." I muttered quietly.

I can't stop thinking about Evelyn and Derek. And how Evelyn's tongue was sliding way down into Derek's throat.
Yuck.
I suppose that's how we looked when we made out too. Took him a short enough time to find a replacement.
Wonder what it was about me that drove him away? Was my kissing that horrible? Other boys I'd dated in the past didn't seem to think so. They were all over me. So why wasn't he?
Was it when I'd asked him what we were? Is that what drove him away?
I got off my couch on the sunny Saturday morning and walked out of front door towards his house.
This was driving me crazy. I had to know.
And I was about to find out.
