Lamar sat on his chair and pumped a pedal that made him as tall as we were. He'd sat in the same position for five minutes and reread the binding marriage contract.
He took off his reading glasses very slowly and bent the handles closed.
After he clasped his hands together he said, "I'm sorry but I cannot annul this marriage."
I sat there dumbfounded.
"What do you mean you can't annul it?" Derek said for me.
"The contract is solid. Unfortunately there are no loop holes so unless you had a million dollars lying around or you somehow convinced the beholder of the contract to reproach it, there is nothing I can do." Lamar explained.
I sucked in a much needed breath, "You don't understand Mr. Lamar, Derek and Evelyn were in on it together, there has to be some law that disbands the original intentions of the contract."
"Mrs. Carter-" Lamar began.
"Williams. W-i-l-l-i-a-m-s. It's still Williams."
"Not according to this nuptial agreement," Lamar said whilst waving the vile paper in front of my face. "Now as I was saying, I've already been contacted by Evelyn's party and they have explained that they have no plans to rescind the contract. Therefore it still exists and the two of you are still married."
I stared at him long and hard before turning to Derek.
"Unbelievable." I said with as much venom as I could manage.
"Tell me about it," He agreed whilst scratching his head.
"Not this," I explained, "You. Your unbelievable."
He furrowed his brow defensively, "How is this my fault?"
"It is. It's all your fault Derek! Did you plan this with Evelyn too? Huh?"
"Mrs. Carter-" Lamar began.
And then I lost it, "Williams! It's still Williams goddamnit!"
"I apologize, please calm down-"
Anger flared through my nostrils, "I most certainly will not calm down!" Before I knew what I was doing, I snatched the contract paper from his hands and ripped it in two.
"There." I said victoriously, "Now we're not married any more."
And with that I stormed out of his office.

The thought of what I was doing must not have registered through my brain because I decided to knock on Derek's front door.
But now it has and I don't have the slightest clue about what to do now.
Derek could be here any second asking me what the hell I was doing and I wouldn't have an answer.
Okay, okay. Calm down. Think this through.
Ask him if he's dating Evelyn and then what drove him away from me.
Once my plan was set in place, my hand raised to hit the wood of the door again when I heard a loud crash behind it. The sound of at least ten bottles breaking echoed through the thin walls of the house.
My hand was still raised in position when I noticed that the front door was already slightly agar.
My body seemed to be controlled by a ghost that drew me to open the creaky door. The sound seemed like a bomb in the dead silence.
"Derek?" I whispered, "Are you here?"
Suddenly, two hands flew out of no where and grabbed at my arm and my mouth to muffle my scream.
