"You pushed him away?" Cass asked in amazement.

I fiddled with a small piece of loose skin around my fingernail nervously, not knowing what to do.

Slowly, my head bobbed forward in a curt, but reluctant, nod.

Cass gasped lightly, her slight intake of breath was the loudest thing in the room.

"And then...?" She asked.

I shook my head and played with strands of my hair, "I dunno Cass. I just froze. And then all of the sudden, memories of Callumn popped into my mind and Derek was so close to me- and I just couldn't. "

"And then what did he do?" She persisted.

I pressed my lips together as I remembered his reaction.

"He wasn't mad..." I began, "But he kindof put up this wall between us. We had such a great moment together and I just ruined it."

She put a hand on my shoulder comfortingly, "Hey, it's not your fault, okay?"

I looked into her caramel brown eyes as she continued to speak, "You weren't ready for your first kiss with him. You really weren't."

Actually, we'd already kissed.

Countless times.

But that was ten years ago. When we were kids. When we were dating. And much before what happened with Callumn. The first time after that was when we had to act as a perfect couple for Evelyn's amusement. But Cass didn't know that part of the story yet.

I kept it to myself because it still seemed so dreamlike. Like it happened a lifetime ago. Sometimes I sat in the room that Derek and I shared, on top of my bed, and thought about that kiss. Sometimes I wondered if it was even real at all.

At this point, I wasn't even sure.

"And what about your parents? Have you talked to them about Derek yet?" She asked.

I cringed at her question.

I'd forgotten about them. I really had. And I hadn't even checked my phone since I got it back. Things were just too crazy. A moment of inward realization loomed over me like the dark shadow of the Empire State Building.

"Err-" I said sheepishly, "Not exactly."

She squinted her brown eyes in a disappointed look, "Kate, you know that you can't hide something like this right?"

I bit into my bottom lip, "I know."

She stood on her lean legs and I couldn't help but notice her toned calves. I stared at them. She actually used her gym membership? And went willingly?

Wow. She had really changed since the last time we had met up.

Cass motioned for me to follow her into the kitchen and I did.

"They're going to find out. You have to tell them before Evelyn does." She said, slightly swaying her hips.

I mumbled an 'Mmm-hmm', still in awe at her legs.

Cass turned on her heel so fast that I almost bumped into her. She was taller than me and so I almost crashed my face into her breasts. She gave me another stern look and I couldn't help but smile goofily.

"Have you been working out?" I asked blatantly.

A slow rush of blood, the color of beet juice, flushed her face.

"Pay attention, we're talking about a serious problem here! Your parents, especially your Mom, will go crazy if they ever found out!" She exclaimed.
