-Chapter 10-
"Ready?"
"On your marks"
"Get set."
Mr Tennant blew the whistle loudly and all of the runners left the starting point in that split second with the speed of lightning.
I was second and Tina was in the lead. I ran as fast as my legs could take me. My adrenaline was rushing in my veins. My eyes focused only on my competitors, which was Tina at the moment and my legs picked up speed. I overtook Tina and my lips curved into a slight smile. My heart was pounding fast as I tried to remain being in the lead, eye on the track in front of me. Sweat was dripping from my forehead. The air going against me as I ran made my hair messy but I didn't care. I turned my head a little to look at Tina to see how far she was behind me.
We finished one lap. 200 metres more. I can do this. I said to myself as I continued my speed but now Tina was in the lead again. I bit my lower lip and a sense of determination made me pick up more speed as I started to sprint. My heart was racing to pump sufficient blood to all parts of my body. Energy was draining at top speed. We were both running with all our might and as we neared the finishing line, our speed increased again to the maximum. I gave what was left in me and sprinted to the finishing line about 1 step before Tina. Disappointment flashed acrossed Tina's face and later was switched with a fake smile as she jogged towards me.
"You are really fast." She said panting and with the same fake smile.
"You are not so bad yourself. You did great too!" I smiled back. For all I knew, my smile was more genuine than hers.
"Both of you did great! Good job! Keep it up. At least maintain this time every training and we might have a chance in winning the competition." Mr Tennant said jogging towards us and gestured all the other runners to have 5 minutes break.
"Can I have a word with Ashley alone for a minute?" He said looking at me and then Tina. She got the signal and left us.
"I see you get along well with Tina." He smiled happily.
"Why won't we get along?" I raised my eyebrow.
"Well, you normally do not get along well with the other runners. You keep to yourself a lot and hardly talk to them during practices."
"What was that suppose to mean?"
"I mean, to the other runners, you come across as a person who a little anti social. You only socialise with your friends only. Except Taylor, you're still close to her?"
I nodded. "Right... Are you sure? What made you think like that? Did they say that? How would you know?" I was like riffle gun, shooting all my questions at him at once.
"I overheard them talking about you once, after you left to Tennessee." He explained. I turned behind and scowled at the other runners giggling while with their water bottles.
"I mean I know I am not the friendliest person here but I am not anti social." I defended myself as I turned back to face coach.
"I not trying to hurt your feeling but I too realised that sudden change of cold attitude only after you know what. You used to be bubbly and always on time before that. You were always cheerful."
