New Chapter

~~

The first few weeks were rocky. Ani and her parents were always fighting, so she never had anytime to do homework. Then she normally couldn't sleep afterword’s and ended up staying up all night, which caused her to sleep during class.

The only good thing that was happening was that David and Luke never fought in front of her. She hung out with David during her first class, Luke during her second, then depending on her mood she would sit by either one of them in her third class. Normally she ate lunch alone, wondering the school. She’d given up on not becoming friends with them. David just followed her around anyway, even if she told him not to. Then Luke just chuckled and said everyone needed a friend.

One day when she went into Mr. C's class she froze. Her parents were standing in the room talking to him. Without even looking at them she marched to the back of the class and sat down, hesitantly David followed her.

"Are you alright?" He asked as he sat next to her. Ani shook her head. "Can I sit alone today David?" He nodded and went to sit by some of his friends.

After a few minuets Luke walked in, he glanced at Ani but a shake of her head made him go sit by his other friends.

Ani closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Why were they here? What could they possibly tell the class that wasn't in their stupid book? She already had to deal with them at home. Couldn’t she just get away from their stress for a few hours?

She opened her eyes as Mr. C started to speak. "Class today is a very special day. Mr. and Mrs. Stama have taken the time to tell us the story of-" his voice was cut off by the door slamming open. Jake strode in, handed him a note, then went and sat in a dark corner of the room. Mr. C read the note then smiled. "Yes as I was saying. They have come to tell us the story of Adam and Eve, for we start learning about how they affected the stars..."

Ani tuned him out. She had heard this story to many times to count. Bored she let her gaze wonder around the room, and noticed something. It was almost like an invisible line had divided the class in half. There was David and everyone in this class he hung out with, then there was Luke and everyone he hung out with. Her and Jake were the only people who hadn't picked a side.

Now that she really thought about it the entire school was like that. All the jocks and kids who ditched class in one group, all the sweet and nerdy kids in the other. She realized that each group hated the other one as well.

No not openly, but if you were looking. The glaring, the accidental tripping, the jokes, the fact that they even separate themselves that way. All of it showed their hatred for the other group. Why though? She’d never noticed it before now.

She didn't really see a reason for them to hate each other. She paused in her thoughts. Maybe they didn't want her to know. She was an outsider after all. But what could make an entire school hate each other?

Ani looked at Mr. C as he called her name. "Yes?" She was too tired to really talk with him; Mrs. Jones hadn't let her sleep last period. Normally she would, but they had a lab today and Ani had been forced to do it.

Mr. C smiled. "I asked a question. I am guessing by your answer you would like me to repeat it?" He didn't wait for her to respond. "What fruit did Eve temp Adam into eating?"

Ani sighed and pushed herself slightly away from the wall. "An apple." Why was he asking this pointless question?

Mr. C tilted his head ever so slightly. "How do you know? What if it was another piece of fruit?" She could hear honest curiosity in his voice.

Ani narrowed her eyes, to tired to have the patience for this. "Why don't you ask my parents? They have spent their whole lives studding thing stuff. They know it better then anything else." She leaned back against the wall and glared at her parents. Her mother shifted uneasily under her gaze.

Mr. C looked at them. "Well I guess the ball is back in your court." He chuckled slightly, finding this funny for some reason. It wasn’t funny.

Ani tuned them back out, the rest of class passed quickly and the moment the bell rang she noticed Jake race out the door. Slowly she stood, she had noticed he was avoiding her sense their talk. He was always the last to class and the first to leave.

Ani walked over to David. "Is Jake avoiding me?" She asked him, hoping he had noticed Jake's strange behavior.

David just shrugged. "He doesn't even know you, why would he be avoiding you?" He glanced at the door. "Jake just gets really busy sometimes. Nothing to do with you."

Ani nodded. Everyone froze as a voice filled the room from a hidden speaker. "Attention all students. After lunch please head for the football field, an assembly will be held there during your fifth period class. Thank you for your attention. Good day." The voice cut out.

Luke appeared at Ani's side. "Assemblies are bad news. Very bad news."

David nodded. "Also there a lot of work, so that means this is really important."

Ani looked at both of them; if she didn't know any better a moment like this might make people think they were friends. "What are you talking about? It can't be that bad, my old schools had this kind of stuff all the time."

Both boys looked at each other like they knew something she didn't, which the probably did. David shook his head. "You wouldn't understand, security has to be called in to watch over the whole thing."

Ani put her hands on her hips. "Would that be because the school seems to be split in half and each group hates the other?"

Luke's eyes widened slightly. "You noticed that?"

Ani became frustrated. "I'm not stupid. I see things, I notice things. Why does everyone think that I just won't notice or care?" That was when Ani noticed that they were fighting in front of the entire class. Taking a deep breath she shook her head. "It’s not worth it." She walked out the door, leaving them.
