The ocean waves vibrate through my ears. The smell of salt in the air tickles my nose. The whispering of people made it seem as though they surrounded me. I open my eyes and saw glazed eyes looking down at me. I panicked. I was confused and my head was throbbing like crazy as my vision becomes more clear. I don't know where I am.
"Hey girl are you okay? You were sleeping here for quite a while now," said a middle aged lady. The language wasn't English but I understood her fluently.
"Um I'm okay..." I replied hesitantly. That's when I noticed, I was speaking the same dialect as her.
"Who are you? A mermaid washed off from the sea? You're so beautiful!" asked the little girl by the lady's side.
"I...I don't know. I can't recall who I am." It was strange. I remember knowing how to speak English. I remember falling asleep. But why can't I remember anything else? "Wait I remember my name. It's Y/N. But where am I?"
The lady looks worried yet afraid at the same time. "Honey you're in Busan." She shooed the group of boys away and quickly called her husband over and told him to call the cops. They were kind enough to wait with me while making sure I was okay. The cops finally arrived and I went along with them. They asked me many questions before taking me to the hospital to get checked. The doctor said there was nothing he could find that was wrong with me but the fact that I lost my memories wasn't too strange because he noted the bump on my head. The puzzle pieces didn't match up but I went back to the police station.
"I'll be taking over because these boys can't handle a pretty lady in the station. So your name is Y/N but you don't remember anything else?" asked the female police officer.
"Yes, that's right."
"Is there anything or anyone you may remember at all?" asked the officer.
"I...I just remember my name. I remember falling asleep on my bed then suddenly I woke up there. I already told the other officer! I'm just as confused as you all are," I said panicking in fear.
"Okay okay, calm down. Just take your time and jot down anything, any details that might come up."
I sat there in tears and waited. As if waiting could help bring back my lost memories I just stared blankly into my lap. Then an echo came to me. A voice I can recall.
"Ji-Jiminie oppa. I know Park Jimin oppa!" I said as I looked up with big eyes. Wiping off the tears I was confident that he was probably a friend or a relative of mine.
"Okay and do you know where this Jimin lives? Or any clue how to find them?" asked the officer.
"...No. I'm sorry."
"There's too many people with the name Park Jimin for us to know who you're referring to but we will try our best," she said while writing down the name.
"I also remember he had a brother...I think his name was...Ji...Jihyun!" Don't ask me how I know but I just know. It's weird. Like my memories are being replaced one piece at a time on purpose. Like someone is playing a game with me.
"Okay well, you wait here. I'll be back."
After long hours of waiting the officer finally came back. "Okay so we have the address of someone we think might be your relatives. I'll drive you out there and we can see for ourselves."
After a drive that felt forever, we arrived at a nice cozy home. I stayed in the car as the officer went to knock on the door. After a while of talking she came for me.
"These folks here say they don't have a daughter but they want to meet you to see if you could be a relative from afar."
I walked out of the car and slowly stepped to the door. The man and his son looked at me and by their faces, I knew they couldn't recognize me.
"I'm sorry officer but I don't think we know this young lady," replied the boy.
"Well that's a shame. I guess she'll just have to stay at the station until we find out where on earth she came from," said the officer.
I looked down to avoid eye contact from them because at this point I wanted to cry again. Another dead end. Then a soft voice from behind stopped my tears from falling.
"Aigoo Jihyun-ah, this is your cousin. Her mother called and said she was coming to visit. How could you forget? Miss officer, what happened to my little girl?" she asked softly as she came and took my hands.
"It was probably an accident, she was found sleeping by the beach with a bump on her head. The doctors checked her and she's perfectly fine so there's no need to worry. It's just that her memories seem to have been lost," explained the officer.
I was glad, relieved. Deep down I knew she probably didn't know me at all but I wanted to believe. I needed to. After the situation was settled, the officer left and the woman lead me into her beautiful home.
"Thank you auntie. You didn't have to pretend to know me," I said as she handed me a glass of water.
"You knew? I'm sorry, this silly old aunty just couldn't let you be brought back into that station. It's no place for such a pretty young girl to be," she said smiling kindly. "What is your name child?" Her voice was tiny and soothing.
"Y/N, my name is Y/N."
"Oh such a pretty name. I'm Mrs. Park and I already talked to my husband and son. You can stay with us until you remember who you are."
I was so stunned by her kindness I started to cry. "Thank you so much for your kindness. I promise, I'll do what I can. I'm good at chores so please let me help you."
She hugged me warmly until I stopped sobbing.
After dinner we prepared for bed. I looked in the bathroom mirror to see a face I didn't even know. Pinning my face in between both my hands I admired myself. Somehow I get the feeling I never felt this beautiful in my life.
"Y/N-ah you can use this room. It's my son Jimin's but since he doesn't stay with us anymore you can make better use of it," said Mr. Park kindly. When he mentioned Jimin's name, he looked so proud. His eyes gleamed like a proud parent's would. I noted that his voice was sweet, similar to the voice of this mysterious Jimin.
"Thank you uncle, I really appreciate it all."
There I was, in the room of this boy who I only know the name of. I don't remember his face nor anything about him but his name. His voice too was familiar but whatever it was, he brought me here. "Park Jimin..who are you?" I asked in a quiet voice as I laid in down on the bed.
