The next morning the rumours of a whole year group project were confirmed.

The principal, Mr. Bass, held an hour long assembly, meaning we skipped period one.

"Now, some of you may have heard that we are going to conduct a project for all students in grade 12 to participate in. This is true. All students in this grade level must must participate in their respective groups, and if you all do well, we might reward you. Your groups have been chosen and have been emailed to you. You can check after period two. Now, the project is about environmental issues in our town. Before anyone complains, this assignment may be boring, but it is educational..." Mr. Bass droned on.

I hoped that I was paired up with at least one of my friends. Not Jacko though. He doesn't do any work in group projects. Nita would be my best choice, but Lissie isn't too bad either. Ley drifts off during projects a lot, and Sam never understands the work. He's always asking questions about everything. Taylor would be alright, I guess. It really depends-

My incessant internal rambling was cut off as a soft voice greeted me.

"Um, hi."

I turned in my seat to face a shy, brown-eyed girl, with long blonde hair.

My new neighbour. Oh, crap. Does she recognize me?

"Um...hey. I'm Melinda. What's your name?" I replied uncertainly.

"Summer."

"Nice to meet you Summer," I smiled.

She smiled back nervously. "I was wondering if you could help me find my next class?"

I looked at the pristine piece of paper she held out to me, scanning her schedule. "Your class is right next to mine. I'll take you there," I replied, with a friendly smile.

She smiled back gratefully, voicing her thanks.

She seemed nice enough, and I felt sorry for her. It must suck being the new kid, especially when you don't have the aura of being popular.

~~~
My morning was much worse than yesterday.
So much worse.
I wanted to just disappear.
In period two, everyone was checking their emails, despite the teacher's warnings and scolding.
Nita was thankfully in my group, along with Ley and Summer. Oliver and Catarina, two other populars were also in my group, along with the Royalty of our school. Sabrina and Ryan.
Having just one of them would have been horrible, but having both of them in my group? It was doomed murder, practically suicide.
"Linda, you there?" Ley asked.
In the midst of my miserable thoughts, I had forgotten my friends were there.
"What?" I replied.
"Ugh, you weren't even listening! Nita, you deal with her."
Nita sighed before complying.
"Linda, Ley was just talking about her birthday. It is next week you know. Anyway, she was just telling us the details."
I glanced at Ley then subtly jerked my chin towards Summer. The poor girl was so quiet, there's no way she could make friends other than us 'peasants'.
Ley, understanding, added "So can you all come?" with a small smile at Summer.
Summer jerked her head up, her features clouded in confusion.
"Me too?" she whispered in shock.
"Of course!" Nita exclaimed.
Summer gave a small smile and nodded.
"Well, I guess I could always ask my parents if I could come."
Nita hollered and so did Taylor, Ley and Lissie squealed and clapped with me, while Sam and Jacko grinned at Summer.
"Ok, well I'll ask Mum first, you guys know what she's like." I announced.
Ley grinned in delight before we all got up as the bell went.
~~~

As I was getting into my car, I saw Summer waiting for the bus.

"Hey Summer! You wanna get a ride with me?" I called out.

Summer looked around, then found me. With a small frown on her face, she pointed to herself and mouthed, "Me?"

I nodded with a grin, and gestured for her to come to my car. She got in and buckled up.

"Um, my address is-" she began.

"Don't worry I know where you live. God, that sounded creepy. I mean, I'm your neighbour, so I know where your house is," I interrupted.

"Oh no, that's fine. How'd you know we were neighbours?"

"Oh, um, I heard the truck last night and kinda peeked out the window to see what you guys looked like."

"Oh, I see. This is going to be fun!"

"Yeah, it really is," I whispered, with a small smile.
