The walk to Dr. Gultz's house seemed to lasts forever. It became harder and harder to take each step away from my family. I already miss them. I will never see them again. I will never hug them again. My brother will not be there to hold me in his arms and share his inspiring words with me when I am down. I only have myself now. There's no one else to support me now.
I look up to see the door of Dr. Gultz's home right in front of my eyes. A sad sigh escapes my lips as the thought of my family lingers in my mind. Dr. Gultz opens the door and gestures me to come in while saying, "I know this is hard for you, but we must get to work. You were made for bigger things."
There's that line again. Made for bigger things. I don't want to pry, so I keep the thought to myself.
As I enter his home, I'm surprised to see that it is quite small. Everything is neatly tucked away. It's very tidy, too tidy, almost as if no one actually lives here. I quickly discover the reason why. Dr. Gultz leads us down a secret passage hidden within the walls of his house. The room is hidden underground and everything is sealed tightly. There are glowing symbols that mark the concrete walls. By the time we reach the room, or vault, I discover that we will not be working alone.
"Allow me to introduce my personal assistant." Dr. Gultz gestures toward a human woman.
"Hi, I'm Lydia. What is your name?" She smiles and waves at me. She seems genuinely happy here, which is a good sign.
"I'm...uh." My face fills with a slight red color. "I actually don't have a name." I give a small smile, trying to mask my embarrassment. Slaves don't have the privilege of receiving a name.
"Oh, well that won't be a problem. We'll give you a name that'll help you fit into where you'll be going," Dr. Gultz chimes in.
"And where is that...if you don't mind me asking?" My curiosity get the better of me.
"Time will tell. I need to conduct a bit more research to figure it out." Dr. Gultz gives me a bland answer. We'll need another blood test. Sit down in the chair and Lydia will tend to you." He walks over to the edge of the room to a desk and begins working. I do as told and sit in the chair.
I am silent the whole time as Lydia takes my blood and runs tests. There is no need to make small talk. It will only distract them from their work and make the process longer than it has to be. The only sounds to be heard are the scratches of pencils and the occasional clicking of the glass from my blood sample.
The rest of the day consists of visual and hearing tests. I'm not quite sure what my purpose is here. I don't bother to ask. I wouldn't like to anger Dr. Gultz. After all, I barely know the man. I don't know how easily he can become angered.
"You will sleep on the bed over there." Dr. Gultz breaks me from my thoughts. "You need to rest up. The tests will not get easier. They will become physically challenging." He returns to his work.
I make my way over to the small bed in the corner of the room. It's short with rough, white sheets draped over it. I hear footsteps come in my general direction. As I turn to see who it is, Lydia appears in my line of sight.
"Put this on." She hands me a metal bracelet.
"What's this for?" I ask.
"It's to monitor your vitals. We need all the data we can get considering what's ahead."
I give her a confused look.
"You'll see as our project progresses. You have a long journey ahead of you." She gives me a reassuring smile before leaving. I snuggle under the scratchy sheets. Everything is confusing me. What am I here for? Obviously I'm here for 'bigger things,' as everyone's been saying.
My thoughts wander away from my troubles and over to my brother. I wish he were here. Well, not here, but with me. I've always gone to him if something was ever troubling me. He always makes me feel better. I drift off to sleep and dream about how things could've been if we were still together.
I am suddenly woken by a violent shake of my shoulder.
"Time to get up. We have work to do." The volume of Dr. Gultz's voice causes my head to start hurting. I rub my sleepy eyes to clear my vision and stand up from the small bed.
"Good morning," Lydia's voice happily chimes.
"Morning," I reply groggily. I can't tell what time it is due to how far underground we are located. Like always, I don't question it.
"Real work begins today," Dr. Gultz says to no one in particular. "Lydia, get her hooked up to the treadmill. She needs to gain muscle. She can eat while she's walking. Put weights on her feet to add some extra resistance. We only have 4 months."
Lydia replies with a, "Yes, sir."
She leads me over to the treadmill and hooks me up to multiple wires and hands me a protein bar. I begin walking at a decent pace while she examines my results on an electronic pad. About 5 minutes pass by before I decide to break the silence.
"Why did Dr. Gultz say we have 4 months?" Lydia looks up from her work.
"Well, we actually have less than 4 months to work." She looks over to Dr. Gultz. He nods in approval. "The sun is going to send out a coronal mass ejection which will cause the earth to become geologically unstable."
I give her a slightly confused expression before clarifying. "So the world is going to burn and everyone will die?"
"Well, sort of. The earth will still be here and most people will die. The population will grow back afterwards."
"So what does this have to do with me?" I'm clearly not connecting the dots.
"We have used one of the Pieces of Eden to predict the future. If the course remains the same, the humans will be the only ones to survive. The Isu will die out."
"I still don't see where I fit in."
Lydia takes a breath before responding.
"You are here to insure that the Isu continue and your DNA matches all of the criteria needed." Before I say anything, she cuts me off. "To sum it all up, we are sending you to the future, sort of, to continue your kind." This causes me to slow my walking pace and trip, nearly causing me to fall flat on my face. My mind is racing. I was not prepared for this. I am not prepared for anything that is to come. They're just going to throw me into a different time period and expect me to be okay?
Lydia's voice pulls me from my jumble of thoughts. "Don't think about it too much. You're stressing yourself out. Your heart rate isn't as low as it should be. Actually, on second thought, let's just take a break."
The treadmill slows to a stop and I step off. All I can think is:
What did I get myself into?
