"Slave!" The deep voice of my master summons me.
"Yes, master?" I respond respectfully. I do not appreciate being a slave among the other humans, but I am grateful that I have been given the opportunity to remain connected with most of my family. My father was unfortunately was sent to another Isu family and we haven't made contact since. It's a shame that such an honorable man is kept as a slave just because he's human, but I guess the Isu have the right to do as they wish with us. After all, they were the ones who created our kind.
"I need you to deliver this letter. Here is the address." My master hands me a slip of paper with an address on it. "This is urgent. Run there or there will be consequences."
"Yes master." I take off running in the direction of the house. My long, brown hair flows behind me as I run. I know the area it is in, but I do not know the exact home. Using my sixth sense (yes it is eagle vision) to quickly locate the building that I need to reach.
I approach the door, my steps quick. Before I even get a chance to knock, the door opens suddenly. A middle aged, Isu man appears from the darkness of the house.
"Is that the letter from Demetrius?" His voice sounds jittery.
"Yes, sir." I hand the letter to him. He tears the envelope open violently and skims through the words of the letter. His hand moves onto the back of his neck as he expresses a nervous look. His eyes snap over to meet my amber brown eyes, then back to the letter.
"Is everything alright, sir? Did I deliver the correct message?" I ask very concerned.
"Yes, yes, everything is quite alright for now." His voice still holds a nervous tone.
"Is there anything else you would like for me to do?"
"No, no. Please return back to your master. I don't want for you to keep him waiting."
"Yes, sir." I take off back to my master's home. My lungs heave with each stride I take. I am in pretty good shape considering the other slaves I have seen. My muscles are toned and I'm not super skinny like the others. This helps me navigate and finish chores quickly. I run in the door and find my master.
"The letter has been delivered." I am only slightly out of breath from my short run.
"Well done."
"Thank you, sir. Is there anything else you would like me to do for you?"
"Not at the moment. Once you're done with your afternoon tasks, meet me in my office."
"Yes sir."
I don't have a good feeling about this. I return outside to meet my brother and mother out to finish our afternoon chores.
"What was that about? You had to run to deliver a letter?" My brother begins to speak. He is a few years older than me. His brown hair matches mine, but his eyes are green, just like mother's.
"Yeah, it was weird. He wants me to meet him in his office once we're done for the day." My voice is plain. My mother shoots her eyes up to meet mine.
"What is it mother?"
"Did he say what he want's to speak with you about?"
"No, mother. He only told me that he would like me to meet him in his office after we're done. Nothing more, nothing less. He didn't say anything about speaking to me. He probably just wants me to clean up his office for him anyway. I wouldn't stress out about it."
"Let me know what happens, daughter. I don't want our family ripped from each other."
"Yes, mother."
We finish with our daily chores just as the sun starts to set. It's time to meet with my master about who knows what. I enter his home. The office door is shut, so I knock on it.
"Come in," I hear from the inside. I step inside and close the door behind me. The same man that I delivered the letter to is standing right next to my master.
"Master, I am here, as you ordered. Is there a special task you wish for me to complete?"
"Somewhat. This is Dr. Gultz." My master gestures to the man. "We would like to take a quick blood sample."
"Yes master. May I ask what this is for?"
"No, no you may not." His voice remains calm. I nod my head in acknowledgment. We have never angered master. He has always treated us well. I've heard of other slaves that had to be controlled by the magic of the Apple because they would not obey their master's words, but these were simply rumors. Still, we have to be cautious. I don't know what he would do if he became angry and I sure don't wish to find out.
"Sit." Master gestures toward a chair. I do as asked. Dr. Gultz sticks a small needle in my arm and takes a small test tube full of my blood.
"We are done here for now. Wait outside and I will call for you when I am ready."
"Yes master." I exit the room, closing the door behind me. There is an empty chair, but slaves are not permitted to sit in Isu chairs unless signaled to.
I eagerly wait outside the door. I would normally pace, but I don't want to cause too much of a disturbance. The noise might anger master and Dr. Gultz. If this is a test to see if I should be sent away, I would like to stay on their good side to possibly convince them to keep me. 5 minutes pass by before my master calls me in.
"Slave!"
I open the door and, again, shut it behind me. My master is the first to speak.
"The results came back as suspected. You will go with Dr. Gultz in the morning."
"So I've been sold?" My reaction is half question, half statement. I thought he was better than this. I don't want to be separated from my family. We're all hard workers so I don't understand why this is happening. None of of have ever crossed him
"No, you just been transported for a...how should we put it?...better cause? That doesn't matter right now. You're dismissed. I will send you to his home in the morning." Master waves me off to exit the room.
"Yes master." I exit the office and, for the last time, I shut the door behind me.
