"I get that you want to be prepared for the Templars, but why would they want you so badly?"
Chase and I have been arguing for a few minutes. The Templars have probably suspected my identity, but with my blood sample, it will be confirmed. They would know that I'm not one of them.
"My DNA! They know how much precursor DNA I have!" I scream at him.
"Okay, okay, but there are others that have a higher percentage than most of the population. It doesn't explain why they would be so determined to get you."
"It's because I..."
"You what, Lexi?"
"It's because of who I am." I say softly.
"What do you mean? Obviously you're not normal. Your brother is like 60 years old and you're-" He pauses and softens his tone. "How old are you exactly?"
"I don't know." I almost whisper. My response doesn't sit well in Chase's mind. I can see the frustration form on his face within a matter of seconds.
"Lexi, just because you don't trust me, doesn't mean you have to lie to me. Just tell me that you don't want to tell me your age and I'll leave it alone. Can't you see that I'm trying here?"
"It wasn't a lie," I say as I break eye contact. There's a short silence. I can tell a lot of questions are brewing in his head.
"Well, I can help you find out if you'd like." His expression softens along with his voice.
"You can't help me."
"Let me at least try." His voice starts to get louder again.
"It would be of no use. Don't bother wasting you time." I say walking past him to the door. I reach to open it before a knife embeds itself inches from my face. Fear surges through me causing my arms to glow gold with the markings of my Apple. I'm currently stuck in between fight and flight. Human instinct is not my friend.
"See? You keep so much from me." He gestures to my arms. "I want to help, I really do, but you have to let me."
I shake off the defensive feeling. In turn, my arms return to normal. He watches my every move, waiting for a reaction of some sort. I take another step toward the door and stop right in front of it, deciding to give him a sliver of information to hopefully subside his curiosity.
"I was born a slave. That is all I will grant you." I say with my back still turned to him. With that, I exit out the door.
I storm into the safehouse and go to Brother for advice, just like old times.
"Brother, what have you learned of the Assassin Order since you've been here?"
"Well..." Brother takes a seat and I do the same. "...They are the sworn enemies of the Templars, although, it is quite ironic that they both fight to achieve the same thing, peace. The tricky part is that they both have opposite views on what that consists of. The assassins believe in freewill. They believe the people should choose everything. The Templars think that freewill will cause chaos. Therefore, they believe that everyone should follow strict rules to ensure order."
"I see. Do you believe siding with the assassins is the best thing to do?"
"I do. The Templars are very forceful. You can reason with the assassins." It seems as if Brother has already thought this through.
"Should we trust them? Chase is starting to want answers."
"I feel that we can trust him. He hasn't given away our identities after being given many chances."
