I gasp for air as I'm brought back into the world. Dr. Gultz is holding the same metal ball, but this time, it's glowing gold with symbols that I cannot comprehend. I look at my body to see my arms glowing the same gold with markings that match the Apple.
"You no longer have a heart. Your power comes from this." He shows me the Apple. "I would like to show you how this works just to establish the power people hold if they get their hands on this."
I stand to my feet to allow him demonstrate the power of the Apple.
"You are no longer a person. You are an object, controlled by this. You are one of the two pieces of a weapon. If you can help it, don't let people get a hold of this. Do you understand?"
"Yes, sir," I respond politely.
"Now, for a demonstration." A small smirk plasters on his face before he sends energy through the Apple to me. My body moves against my will. I begin to kneel on the ground in front of him.
"Wh-what did you do to me?" My voice shakes from fear.
"We made you into a weapon. You probably haven't noticed, but there is a war between human and Isu. Unfortunately, we need the humans. As Lydia told you, the world will die in a fire, but that's only if we fail. We are falling behind, but that doesn't mean we can't stop it. They just need to hear the words 'make us safe.' They need to save us. If they will not listen, you will make them."
"I'm not going to hurt them."
"Oh, but you will."
My eyes shoot open as I gasp for air. My body is layered in sweat from the memory. Brother rises from his rest before rushing to my side. I pull him into a tight hug and bury my face into his chest.
"Shh, it's alright." My breathing eventually slows to normal due to the comfort of my brother. His presence brings a sense of home...something that I need.
"You've been through a lot. I don't know everything about what happened, but I do know that they had no right to do it. You deserved better. I'm sorry I wasn't there for you. I tried, I tried."
"I know you did. There was nothing more you could've done."
The creek of a tree branch pulls us from our moment. I notice that Chase is awake, and seems to have been for a while now by the way he watches us. He appears alert and attentive. The sight of him makes my body tremble slightly. He could easily kill me. He's dangerous.
"We need to get out of here. They probably found us," my brother states.
We hop out of the cave and make a run for it. I stumble along for a few minutes before I become out of breath.
"I think we lost them," I speak out, I turn around to find that I'm all alone. Then I mentally stick the pieces together; Chase must've taken my brother. This was probably his plan all along. I should've known that an assassin would betray us. I should've never put any trust into him.
I decide to head back the way I came so I can get him back. He shouldn't have messed with me. He should be scared of what I'm about to do to him. As I'm doing this, a hooded figure stands with a sword in his hands. Very well then, I guess he wants a fight. I'll show him a fight. I begin to stick my arms out to lift him before something slams against the back of my head, causing me to black out.
As I wake up I see metal bars...again. At least now I know how to get myself out. I sit up and ready my arms, but of course, they're bound together. I'm useless in this position. My head starts to pound, causing me to wince out in pain.
"Wow, they must've hit you pretty hard." His familiar voice triggers a different feeling, rage. Chase.
"You think?!"
"I'm sorry. I didn't expect them to-"
"Oh, so now you're sorry. I highly doubt that." Chase lowers his head. "Stupid assassins," I mumble quietly.
"I'll alert the others that you're awake." With that, Chase exits the room.
A few moments pass before 3 other hooded figures follow Chase back into the isolated room that I'm confined in. All, including Chase, have the Assassin symbol embroidered onto their matching uniforms. Chase has a hood, but doesn't cover his face with it.
The rage burns within me. I no longer fear them, not with the powers that I have recently rediscovered. Now, I want a fight. I want them to suffer the same way their victims do.
One of the hooded men steps in front of the others. The light is perfectly placed to mask his face from me. Weapons are covering him everywhere. I spot a sword, a dagger, small knives, and the vambrace that probably contains a blade, like Chase's. There are most likely other weapons hidden under his uniform.
"Lexi, was it? How exactly were you going to aid the Templars?" The man in front speaks, wasting no time and getting straight to the point. His voice is deep and full of power. I simply give him a death glare.
"Alright then, our recruit over here..." He gestures to Chase. "...tells me that this would probably happen. So I'll ask a different question, why do you fear our order?"
I hesitate before answering. "I don't fear you, not anymore. I know what you do to people. You are monsters and some day, you'll pay for that. I intend on making sure that happens." I spit the words out with disgust.
"If you know of our actions, then you should know of how well we can wield a blade in battle."
"Take the restraints off of me and we'll see who comes out on top in battle." My voice is fierce and daring. The assassin lightly chuckles, obviously not taking me seriously.
"I guess we will speak to you at a later time when you're less...hostile." He turns around with the other assassins following his path.
"All you do is hide behind your hoods! Your enemy may be the Templars, but you are no better than them!" I shout at them as they exit. Chase is the only one to stay behind.
"Why are you still here?" I ask him with darkness in my eyes. My blood feel as if it's boiling with anger. His mouth opens as if the words aren't coming out.
"Never mind that. Where is my brother?" I interrupt him.
"Safe. He is in a safe house in assassins' territory. It is very close to here. Also, if you are going to ask anyone about him, refer to him as your father."
I give Chase a confused look. What is he planning?
"And why would I do that?"
"If you want to keep your identity a secret for now, refer to him as your father. It is more believable. If you call him your brother, both of you will be questioned. Keep in mind that the assassins will do anything to gain leverage on the Templars. The fact that you have something the Templars need, makes the assassins very uneasy." He begins to exit the room.
"Chase." He turns back to look at me.
"Thank you."
"Of course."
"Also, one more thing. Why are you helping me?"
"Well from what your brother has said, you've had a hard life. Also, I'm proving a point that I'm not the bad guy. You can trust me."
I give him a soft smile. He returns it and exits the room. Maybe he isn't so bad after all.
