You spun the smooth, golden ring around your finger.

No, you weren't engaged, at least not anymore. When you woke up in 2015 the first thing you did was buy a ring. You had wanted it since he'd proposed to you. You got one for him at the same time. You didn't wear it on her own finger, though, it just didnt feel right. You didn't want to leave it in your shared apartment, however trustworthy Steven Rogers was, so you wore it on a chain around your neck. In a way, it was like carrying his dog tags.

Steve had been pulled into some mission from Fury. He divulged some of the top-secret information to you in a crowded cafe in hopes no one could pick up on the conversation. Somehow, he thought he could tell you about the mission and not let you join in.

The two of you were now fighting the "Winter Soldier" and other HYDRA agents on a bridge. All in a day's fun. Well, not when the face mask of the menace of a man you're fighting is torn off, revealing the lost love of your life. Had he not been a known murderer, you likely would have rejoiced.

You had just taken down another HYDRA agent when you ran to Steve and heard his exhausted breath when you approached.

"Bucky?" He asked.

"Who the hell is Bucky?"

You wanted to run to him. A tugging in your chest begged you to reach out to him, to hold him in your arms, but a tug on your arm told you to run away or you'd die.

Three weeks passed, and you refused to sleep until necessary. In those weeks, you probably only got fifteen hours of sleep. You wanted to sleep, craved it even, but every time you closed your eyes his confused face flashed into your mind. Thoughts if his torture and what he went through often plagued your psyche. Could you even trust him if you saw him again? James Buchanan Barnes brutally beat his best friend just days ago, leaving you to care for Captain America while trying to mend your own fractured mind.

Just as you began to settle back down, to accept that you would never have closure, Steve was off to find Bucky.

"I'm coming with you," you said to him as he packed in the darkness of your shared apartment.

"You scared me half to death."

"Sure I did, Steven." You pulled your own duffel-bag over your shoulder to display there was no talking you out of your decision. Steve let out a sigh.

"There's no talking you out of this is there?" He gave you a look somewhere between disapproving parent and kicked dog.

"Not a chance." You grabbed his bag and went to leave the room when his hand fell gently upon your shoulder.

"(Y/N), why won't you let me do this alone?" His eyes fell to the ring around your neck as if he knew the exact answer.

"I told you a long time ago. I'm with you till the end of the line." Steve cracked a small smile before you headed to the garage that you two stored your bikes. "Do you think this'll be overkill?"

"Maybe, but at least we can get the job done."

---

You figured James would have fled the country by now, but you got lucky.

He was at a farmer's market in Iowa.

He had been hiding out for a while. When he saw you two, he wasn't the most thrilled. In fact, he thought you were going to kill him. Then he saw Steve. He calmed down when he saw Steve. It took an hour for him to remember who you were. Apparently you looked like a former HYDRA agent.

"James, please. I- I know how much you've been through. I know what they did to you, but you have to remember me," You nearly cried in desperation.

Your finger traced over the ring necklace and an idea popped into your head, lighting up your eyes and straightening your posture.

"I want you to think about this really hard. It may sound a bit weird, but you have to trust me on this." Steve raised his eyebrows at you.

"What are you do-"

"Not now Steven." You took the ring off the string and placed it n Bucky's hand. "Read the inside."

I'll love you till the end of the line

A weak smile made its way onto Bucky's lips and tears filled his pale blue eyes. A laugh broke through the night air. "(Y/N)," he chuckled out. "How am I gonna wear this?" He flexed his metal hand.

Steve stifled a laugh. The tight could around your heat finally receded.

"We'll figure something out, Doll."

"I'm sorry we never got to go on a real date, I'm sorry that we never got to actually get married."

"Dates are overrated. Fighting nazis togther was enough to bond."

He kissed you on the cheek hesitantly. Steve sighed, looking away. "You always get the girl," he joked.

---

After about a year of rehabilitation, you and Bucky got officially married. There was no service, you just signed the papers and cried a bit. You waited too damn long to plan a ceremony.

Tony ended up making a modification to a chink of Bucky's finger so it mimicked a ring, while he still wore yours around his neck.

It's safe to say you lived happily. For a long, long time.
