Warnings: A little emotional
---
There she sat, eyes closed, head tilted towards the sky, and a smile on her lips. Her one joy in life.
She came from a broken home. Her mother had fallen out of love with her father, who ended up taking his own life. That's when she gave up on love of any sort. She was only fourteen.
Now, at twenty three, she was starting to doubt herself.
She met a man here at the park. He had been jogging. The two came every morning, and had both had been hoping the other would approach them.
Steve ended up talking to her first. They got on well, and over their time together, they had become close friends.
The time came that (Y/N) realised what she was feeling for Steven Grant Rogers. She asked if he felt the same way, to which he said yes.
They tried having a romantic relationship. It went well for three years. (Y/N) was able to put up with Steve's long absences, and even helped him train. They were a power couple.
It had been five years since they had met, and three since they started dating, when (Y/N) got sick.
No one knows how she her illness was so advanced so quickly, but that doesn't mean they weren't going to try to beat it.
Steve was at the hospital all day, everyday he could. He brought her anything she asked for, and despite her tired and sunken features, he told her how beautiful he thought she was. He never failed to make her laugh.
"Steve," she said one day, "when I was younger I saw my father cry and curse at the wind. He broke his own heart, and I watched as he tried to reassemble it. That was the day that I promised I'd never fall in love. Because to me it didn't exist. Steve, darling, you were the only exception."
Steve's blue eyes glimmered with tears. "Where is this going (Y/N)? You're starting to scare me."
"Don't worry about me anymore. We both know I'm not going to make it. I can't afford to get surgery again. What I'm saying, is that I want my exception to find his own exception."
"But that's you, (Y/N). I can't let you talk like that. You're gonna get through this. We're gonna get through this."
A soft smile graced (Y/N)'s lips. "Okay."
For the next three weeks, Steve spent all his time getting money together for (Y/N)'s surgery. When he finally had enough, she was given the treatment she needed. However, something went wrong during surgery, and (Y/N) was paralyzed from the hips down.
Steve never once thought about leaving her. The extra help she sometimes needed, and refused to accept that she needed, were little moments of heaven for him.
As soon as (Y/N) was out of the hospital, Steve proposed. Which earned a very enthusiastic yes.
At the wedding, (Y/N)'S vows were about how her parents couldn't have love, how she gave up on love until she met Steve, and how she felt blessed that someone as amazing as Steve had fallen in love with her.
Steve had a one up with his vows.
"(Y/N), one day, you told me that I was your only exception, that I was the only person you had let yourself fall in love with. I had only known love once before in my life, and even my first love could not compare to you. You are the most beautiful and kind human being I have ever met, and I promise you that I will never leave you, no matter what rough patches we encounter."
The two were married for another fifty some years, had three children, and died only two weeks apart. No one had ever heard them fight, other than playfully. Their lives were lived to the fullest, and their hearts never emptied.
The only thing either regretted, was not introducing themselves sooner.
