Chapter 19

CHAPTER 19

We walk into the hospital, prepared for what we may find out next. I'm assigned a room and a doctor. He tests me and then leaves the room, leaving Effia, Johanna, and I.

"Well, what now?" Johanna asks impatiently.

"We wait for the results." I say following with a sigh.

When the doctor walks in all eyes are on him.

"So?" Johanna asks impatiently.

The doctor drops his shoulders. "I'm sorry Mrs. Mellark. Its a negative. You aren't pregnant."

My jaw drops and so does my hand. I felt as though I was going to faint.

"Oh my god." Effie says covering her mouth.

I can't help but feel relived. I was not ready for a child nor becoming a stay at home wife. But I also feel dismal. Peeta and I really wanted something that we could call ours. Something that has a little bit of both of us in it.

"Katniss," Effie says putting her hand on my shoulder.

"I'm fine Effie." I respond. "Lets just go home."

Once we are home I find Peeta on the couch tapping his foot repeatedly. He looks up from the floor and stands up. He looks at me with wide eyes and raised eyebrows.

I just run into his arms and clutch the back of his shirt with tears streaming down my cheek to his neck.

"Katniss, Katniss it's okay." Peeta wraps his arms around me. "Shhh, it's okay." He rubs my back gently calming me down.

"Oh, shit." I mumble between the tears.

"What?" asks Peeta.

"I forgot my moms bandages." I say.

I feel him chuckle a little. "It's fine Katniss, she will understand."

"I will understand what?" My mom stands in the door way.

"You will understand that Katniss forgot to get the bandages from the Capitol for you." explains Peeta with my head still on his shoulder as he pats my back.

"Oh, Katniss its fine. Hazelle just came over earlier with some from Gale."

"See Katniss, its fine." Peeta whispers into my ear.

"Katniss what's wrong?" My mom asks.

"Nothing." I wipe my eyes and lift my head from Peetas shoulder. "Just a little tired, that's all."

"Why don't you go upstairs and sleep." Peeta suggests.

"Alright." I walk up the stairs leaving Peeta and my mom.

When I wake up, its already morning and once I smell the faint scent of beef stew I realize I'm famished. I didn't eat at all yesterday. I walk down the stairs to find beef lamb stew and cheese buns at the table with Peeta behind it.

"Hey." he smiles.

"Hey." I say. I sit down at the table.

"I thought you might be hungry." he says.

"Thanks." Not caring about my manners, I stuff my mouth. I hear Peeta chuckle a little as I down the stew.

"Katniss!" Effie snaps.

I stop and turn to see Effie and Johanna standing in the doorway.

"What are you guys doing here?" I ask.

"We never left genius." Johanna says.

I look at Peeta. "What?"

His face goes frozen. "Um, Johanna needed a place to stay so I let her stay in one of the extra rooms."

"What?" I repeat.

"Oh calm down." She crosses the floor to take a cheese bun off my plate and starts picking at it. "I need a place to crash because, well, 7 is having some major trouble."

"What trouble, Johanna?" I ask.

"Well... it's nothing." she says shaking her head.

Peeta and I exchange glances quickly then look away. "Well, Johanna. Your welcome to stay as long as you like." says Peeta. "Right Katniss?"

"Sure." I say ignoring Johanna's stare.

I walk back upstairs and hop into the shower. I dry my hair and put it into its usual back braid. I walk downstairs to find Peeta enjoying a cup of tea with Johanna.

"Hey." Peeta smiles when I get downstairs.

"Hey." I fake a smile. I didn't feel comfortable with Johanna and Peeta in the same room. Alone.

"I'll be back, I have a meeting with some guy from 1 that I don't even know what it's about." Johanna stands and leaves.

Peeta stands and blushes. I shoot him an evil look. "What?" he asks.

"Your forgetting that your wife is standing right in front of you." I snap.

Peeta wraps his arms around my waist and kisses my nose. "No, I know exactly whose standing in front if me." he smiles then his face goes soft. "Are you okay?" he asks.

I nod. "I'm fine. It's not like we can't try again." I say.

"Exactly." Peeta says before gently pressing his lips to mine.
