CHAPTER 12
I open my eyes then close them again, because the bright sun that now shines through the peaks of the white curtains blind me. I open them back up again, only to squint once more. Once my eyes are adjusted, I notice how I'm wrapped around Peeta. His one arm under my resting head and the other wrapped around me, along with my arms wrapped around him. This was how we usually slept, but now we were married.
Peeta opens his eyes and looks at me. "Goodmorning." He smiles.
"Goodmorning." I smile and kiss his lips gently. "Guess what."
"What?" says Peeta.
"We're married." I smile. He gives a small chuckle then kisses me again.
I can't believe I'm actually married. To Peeta. My name is now Katniss Mellark. To be honest I always expected myself to marry Gale, but then again I never expected to go into the Hunger Games.
A knock on the door downstairs interrupts us. "Go away!" shouts Peeta.
"Open this door immediately!" shouts Effie.
Peeta lets out a sigh then gets up and walks downstairs as I follow. "What?" says Peeta as he opens the door.
"You two!" She points at us and stomps in. "What's this about marriage? You both got married yesterday! And you never told anyone!"
"Nope." says Peeta.
"You two should be ashamed. You know what this means don't you?" says Effie. "You have to have another wedding in the Capitol for all your fans! It will be a day to remember."
"No, Effie." I say. "That's why we were secretive. You would have made us have one in the Capitol."
"Pitty, because I've already made the arrangements." She smiles. "It will be in two weeks, held in President Paylors garden. It will be spectacular!"
"Of course it will." I say mocking her voice as I walk upstairs.
I don't want a Capitol wedding. It will just make us look like complete fools. Plus what's the point, we are already married.
I'm shortly followed by Effie who just waits in the doorway. "My dear, why can't you just accept the fact that everything you do will be public from now on?"
"Oh like when we have kids?" I ask sarascticslly. "Sorry. I didn't mean to snap."
She smiles. "Believe it or not but I wasn't always like this. Yes, it was a tragic few years but then I finally came to my senses. But there was just one thing that I missed. Love. I fell in love with a man. A poor man to be truly honest, he didn't have much but he was smart. Smart enough to be president."
My eyes go wide and my jaw drops down. "You mean-"
"Yes, I was in love with Snow before he was president. We were married actually. But then he was elected president and all his power went to his head. So I left him."
"Are you implying that I should leave Peeta?" I ask.
"No, heavens no. I'm just saying, make sure you have a good grip on him."
Our wedding is suppose to be in two weeks. I'm forbidden to see Peeta until then. In the Capitol, they have a tradition when you aren't allowed to see each other for at least 6 months. That way when they meet at the altar they are beyond happy to see each other. But since Peeta and I are already married they made in exception for two weeks. I could never go six months without Peeta, let alone two weeks. So Peeta stays at his old house in the Victor Village across from mine. How do they keep us from seeing on another? They don't tell us, but we know we are being watched.
But the best part if having our wedding in the Capitol, is that my mother will be there. She wasn't going to come to our District 12 wedding because it reminded her too much of Prim.
On the day of our wedding, we are in the Capitol. I'm in my own separate room with Effie and my prep team. We decided on a simple white sleeveless princess dress. My hair is up in the braid that I wore before and has a veil tucked under it, so it streams down my back and stretches across the floor.
I quickly slip out of the room, hoping not to let anyone know. I walk down the halls, searching for Peetas room. Once I find the room with Peacekeepers at it, I assume its Peetas.
"I'm here to see Peeta. Can you please let him know I'm here." I tell the Peacekeepers.
"No, you must return to your room immediately." says one of the Peacekeepers.
"Excuse me? This is my husband. You are required by law to let me see him." I snap.
"I'm afraid not miss Everdeen." A voice calls down the hall.
I turn and see a smiling Paylor making her way towards me.
