CHAPTER 25

"Run Katniss run!" Finnick shouts from behind me.

"Help! Katniss help!" I hear Prims painful scream as it hovers over me.

"Katniss! Katniss!" Next Gales terrifying call for help. I felt as though I wanted to fall to the ground and rip my ears off.

I see Peeta and Johanna with there hands up and palms facing us. I felt angry that they didn't run after us. Right as I get to Peeta I smash my shoulders into what seems like a non electric force field. That's why they didn't chase after us. Peeta mouths words to me but I can't hear him. My hearing was possessed by the treacherous screams of my loved ones that recycled every time I shot the stubborn Jabber Jays. I fall to my knees and curl up by Finnick, covering my ears with my hands practically crushing my skull trying to block out all the screams.

"Katniss! Katniss wake up! Katniss!" My eyes open and I'm back in the hospital. I sit in a ball with Peeta just like I did when the force field went up and he comforted me. "Shh. Shh. Katniss." He rocks me back in forth on the sofa in his hospital room with his lips on my ear. I hear the steady pace of his breathing and it calms me down. "Its okay Katniss. Its not real." he whispers to me.

"But it was. Everything was real." I cry.

"Buts it's gone now. Your safe. Your with me." he says.

"Oh, Peeta I'm sorry. Did I wake you?" I ask.

"No, you didn't. I'm fine Katniss." Peeta whispers. "Hey, guess what?" he says in a cheerful mood.

"What?" I ask.

"I get to go back to twelve today." he smiles.

"Oh my gosh thats today?" I ask now happy with the night time horrors far behind me.

"Yes." he smiles.

"Oh thats great Peeta." I wrap my arms around him and hug him tightley.

"Katniss, what about the baby?" he asks.

"We can wait until your back home." I say.

"But-" I stop his words with my lips on his. Which probably is making it worse, but it usually worked the last two times.

"Your not helping." he smiles taking his lips away from mine briefly.

"I know, but it made you quiet." I smile.

"Yes it did," he cups my chin in his hand and kisses me softly. Then he stops. "but I'm serious Katniss. I won't be home for six weeks. That's about a month in a half."

"Peeta there's no use in trying when you aren't home. We can wait for a while but in the mean time I won't leave your side until it's time for you to go home." I say.

"Really? You would do that?" he asks.

"You would have done the same for me." I say.

"Peeta! Katniss!" We both turn and see Annie in the doorway. "It's so good to see you!" She runs and gets in between us on the couch and hugs us both.

"You too Annie. How are you feeling?" Peeta asks.

"Oh! I'm doing great! Thanks to Katniss." she says

"What did you do?" Peeta asks.

"She had a melt down in the hallway and I called for help. It was a couple days ago." I say.

"Yeah, she's a hero." Annie smiles. "Oh! You two need to visit four sometime and meet my son. I'm just in here for some updates, he's back in four with my sister. His name is Kai. He looks just like his father, except for his eyes."

"We'd love to visit sometime." Peeta smiles.

Her face lights up with joy. "Great!" she jumps up and runs out the door.

"She's such a sweet girl." Peeta says.

Once we are back in twelve, Peeta insists I go back home to check on my mom and Johanna. With Rory sick, they could use some help on the side. As I make my way back to my house, I pray Gale won't be there, considering our last conversation. I walk into the kitchen to find my mom with Johanna cutting up some things.

"Oh, Katniss! Your back." My mom smiles. She wraps her arms around me. "Hows Peeta?" she asks.

"He's great. He's able to come home in six weeks. The doctor insists I do daily visits but Peeta recommended I stay with him, so I will be doing that." I say.

"Awe, how sweet. By the way your cousin has been stopping by quite a few times checking up on you." I shiver at how long Johanna holds on to the word cousin. "You better tell him you didn't die or anything. That would have been a tragedy, now wouldn't it?" Johanna smiles.

I decide to go over to Gales personally and apologize for our previous conversation. I knock on the door and it opens, but with no one behind it. I enter the house. "Gale? Hazelle?" I call. I'm knocked down to the floor by a familiar scent. I take in the smell of roses and blood and start to tremble. I felt as though I was going to cry, but I wasn't going to give him that satisfaction. I keep my head down with my eyes pinned to the floor, refusing to look up into the snake like eyes that haunt my every dream. The sound of heavy footsteps dangerously get louder and louder until they wait by my head. Then I could have sworn I felt a slight drizzle of thick liquid on the back of my neck.
