--Devyn's POV--

I stepped out of the large auditorium and into the sunlight. The safety seminars and self-help lectures were making me quite anxious about starting college.

Of course the welcome program would do all the fun activities the first few days and then make us sit through hours of talking.

After I'd gotten home the previous night, I showered and went to bed. My mind was still racing; I was so happy things were finally official with Calum.

Unfortunately I woke up late and barely had time to get ready before meeting my group. I didn't even get to charge my phone. My group was supposed to meet at 9am so I figured I'd have some free time in the afternoon to catch up with my sister and the boys.

The damn seminars lasted an eternity. Once those were done with, the groups were split up and moved around so we could meet new people.

Even if I had the chance to text, I couldn't. My phone died somewhere between the sexual harassment talk and the announcement of the top 5 campus crimes.

"I'm gonna go eat," Grace said. "See you at the bowling alley later?"

"Sure," I smiled.

Grace walked off with a girl and a few guys. She was starting to come out of her shell and it turns out people really liked her. She was pretty and once she got talking, she was funny and friendly. Of course, she still preferred spending time on her phone, but she was making progress. Unlike me.

As I began walking away from the auditorium, I noticed the sun wasn't too high up in the sky. I knew my sister and the boys would probably be looking for me.

I picked up my pace and began the short trek back to my residence hall. As I reached the door, I searched my pockets for the access card to the building.

Crap.

I didn't have it. I had the key to the room but not the building card.

Releasing a deep sigh, I sat on a bench near the door to wait for someone to open it.

I fiddled with the ends of my hair until I heard people approaching.

"Hey, Devyn," I heard as I looked up.

"Hey, Matthew," I smiled.

He was with a tall, lanky guy I didn't recognize. Matthew reached in his pocket for the card key.

"Lost your key?"

"No, just forgot it... I think."

He put his access card through the slot and held the door open for me.

"Thanks," I said politely.

"No problem," he smiled. "This is Gage, my friend from home."

Gage nodded his head to acknowledge me as he looked me over.

"Hi," I said, uncomfortable under his gaze.

Gage said no more as he walked to the stairs.

"He's not much of a talker," Matthew said apologetically.

"I kinda got that," I laughed.

"So you wanna get something to eat? I came back to grab my dining card. I'm probably gonna go get pizza or something."

"Oh I don't know. I really have to charge me phone," I answered.

"So come with me while and leave your phone charging in your room," he smiled.

I was a bit hungry, but a red flag went up in my head.

Going out with Matthew wouldn't be the smartest thing to do. I'd finally entered a romantic relationship with Calum and dinner alone with Matthew wouldn't look too good.
