The bitter taste of blood fills my mouth. I feel my head being pulled up by my hair and I look into the face of my mother. Tears run down my face but that doesn't seem to change anything.

"Get up!" she yells at me. I shakily rise to my feet and she pushes me into the wall. I wheeze as the wind is knocked out of me.

"You're a disgrace!" she screams one last time before she kicks me to the ground. She leaves the room, and I just lay there, wondering what I ever did wrong. My name is Charlotte Harrison and I go to West Side middle school. I'm in eighth grade and don't have much to enjoy in life. My mom is an Alcoholic and beats me whenever she sees fit. That morning when I woke up, I knew that today was gonna be a shitty day. I stumbled into the bathroom and took a look at myself. My lip was swollen and I could tell that there was an area on my head that had been bleeding. I washed my face and watched the blood run down the drain. I pulled on my black converse and walked to the bus stop.

About halfway into the bus ride, this asshole named Jackson calls me a fat ass. Great, just another person to tell me how meaningless I am. The first time, I ignored him. But when he chimed in again, I was so angry that I punched him right in his stupid face. Right at that moment, the bus arrived at the school, so I got off giving him the death stare the whole time. It's not a good idea to mess with somebody who's been through so much. I feel like a misfit everywhere I go. I have no friends, and nobody that cares about me.

In the locker room, the other girls judge me on how I look. I can always feel their cold stares and hear their hash whispers. I always ignore them and move on with my day. Today while standing in the lunch line, two girls appeared and said:

"What happened to your face?" I looked her straight in the eye, but I didn't say anything. Oh if only they understood. If only they understood what it was like to be mistreated and have a mom that's wasted half of the time. If only they knew. Anger surged through me.

"Why don't you mind your own goddamn business?" I said. With that, I stormed out of the line and out of the cafeteria. I went into the bathroom and made sure nobody was in there. I locked myself in a stall, and forced myself to throw up. When I was done, I pulled up my shirt and looked at my stomach. You could almost see my ribs, but not quite. The last time I weighed myself, I was 105 pounds. I pulled down my shirt and couldn't fight the urge to cry. I'm so imperfect.. I thought to myself. I stormed out of the bathroom. Despite the fact that I had 2 more classes left that day, I just kept on walking. Right out the school doors without looking back.........
